The short answer
On a DeChef dishwasher, why the door is not sealing or latching comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at the faucet quick-connect and the hose set, remade by hand on every use, because a large share of these are installed by the buyer and re-plumbed each time they run, so the install is a moving part on this line rather than a preliminary to check once. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- The door will not latch without being pushed hard.
- Steam escaping around the door during a cycle.
- A wet line down the front of the door or on the floor at the door edge.
- The gasket is torn, flattened, or lifted out of its channel.
- The door drops open rather than staying where it is put.
- The door does not line up with the cabinet fronts on either side.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the machine will not start at all, read the will-not-start page — the door switch is on that list too. If water pools under the machine rather than at the door, that is a pump or hose leak. A door that will not stay half-open is a spring or cable problem rather than a seal problem.
Causes, ranked for a DeChef dishwasher
- The faucet quick-connect and the hose set, remade by hand on every use — Why this rank: A large share of these are installed by the buyer and re-plumbed each time they run, so the install is a moving part on this line rather than a preliminary to check once.
- A latch or strike out of adjustment — Why this rank: A latch that needs a shove is a latch that is not aligned, and misalignment is what eventually tears the gasket.
- A stretched door spring or a broken door cable — Why this rank: It changes how the door closes as well as how it hangs, and a door that slams no longer seals evenly.
- A machine not level or not secured in the opening — Why this rank: The tub twists in an out-of-level opening, and a twisted tub cannot present a flat face to the door.
- Residue and detergent film on the gasket face — Why this rank: It stops the seal compressing evenly and it is the reason a good gasket leaks at one point.
- A custom cabinet panel heavier than the door was balanced for — Why this rank: It overloads the springs, drops the door and pulls the seal out of contact at the top.
What to check, in order
- Wipe the gasket and the tub face clean, then close the door on a strip of paper at several points and pull. — Order: First — Why: It separates residue from wear and it localises the failure, which decides whether a gasket is even needed.
- Close the door slowly and watch where the latch meets the strike. — Order: Second — Why: A latch that needs force is misaligned, and that is what tore the gasket in the first place.
- Open the door to horizontal and let go — it should hold its position. — Order: Third — Why: A door that drops has a spring or cable problem, and that changes how everything above it seals.
- Put a level across the door opening and check the mounting brackets. — Order: Fourth — Why: A twisted opening cannot be corrected at the gasket, and levelling is the only fix.
Steps a homeowner can take
- Switch the machine off at its breaker before adjusting the latch, the springs or the mounting. — Tools: none — Time: a moment
- Wash the gasket and the tub sealing face with warm soapy water and dry them. — Tools: cloth, warm soapy water — Time: several minutes
- Run the paper test at several points around the door and mark the failing points. — Tools: a sheet of paper, masking tape — Time: several minutes
- Reseat any lifted section of gasket into its channel, working from the middle outward. — Tools: none — Time: several minutes
- Level the machine with its feet and check the mounting brackets to the counter or the cabinet sides. — Tools: spirit level, screwdriver — Time: half an hour or so
- Open the door to horizontal and confirm it holds; if it drops, look at the spring and cable on each side. — Tools: flashlight — Time: several minutes
Before you start
Safety
Switch the machine off at its breaker before adjusting the door, the springs or the mounting. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Door springs are under tension and will snap back — release them deliberately and keep fingers out of the path. Never tape, wedge or otherwise defeat a door latch to make the machine run.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the gasket is clean and intact, the machine is level and secured, and the door still leaks steam or will not latch without force. Spring, cable and strike replacement usually means the machine comes out of the opening.

Generalized information
This page is generalized: it covers DeChef across the whole dishwasher range rather than one family or one model group. It does not cover model-level pages for individual DeChef units, which do not exist in this reference yet; when they do, they will be linked from here. Until then, check the rating plate for your model group before ordering any part, because that is what the ranking above cannot narrow for you.
