The short answer
On a Dayton freezer, where the water is coming from comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at a condenser fouled by the shop, stockroom or lab air the unit lives in, because this is commercial equipment installed in warm, dusty, high-traffic spaces, and on this class of unit the environment rather than the components is what produces the complaint. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- Water on the floor at the front of the cabinet, usually after a defrost.
- A sheet of ice across the cabinet floor under the contents.
- Water running down the inside of the back wall.
- A wet patch behind the cabinet where the drip pan sits.
- Standing water in the bottom of a chest cabinet that never drains.
- Damp under the cabinet with no visible water anywhere else.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the outside of the cabinet is beaded with condensation, that is a seal and humidity question rather than a leak. - Find the drain outlet inside the cabinet and pour warm water into it. — Order: Second — Why: It is the top-ranked cause and the test is unambiguous — either the water goes away or the drain is blocked.
- On a chest cabinet, check the drain plug at the front, inside and out. — Order: Third — Why: A plug in the wrong state explains both a wet floor and a cabinet that will not drain when you want it to.
- Put a level on the cabinet and check the seal all the way round with a sheet of paper. — Order: Fourth — Why: A tilt and a leaking seal both produce water that has no obvious source, and both are checked without tools.
Steps a homeowner can take

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Standing water beside a plugged-in appliance is a shock hazard — cut the power before you kneel in it. Never probe a drain with a metal tool; the evaporator tubing is directly behind it.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the drain will not clear with warm water and a soft probe, when it re-freezes within days of being cleared, or when water is arriving from behind the evaporator panel. A repeating drain freeze usually means the defrost circuit is failing, and that is metered work.
