The short answer

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening the pump filter. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix chlorine bleach with any acid cleaner or vinegar in the drum — the combination produces a toxic gas. Wear gloves when clearing a pump filter; it holds sharp debris as often as it holds lint.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the boot, the dispenser and the filter are all clean, a hot maintenance wash has been run, the door is being left ajar and the smell returns anyway. What remains is usually residue inside the outer tub or a drain connection, and neither is reachable from the front.
