The short answer
Most new freezer noises are the cabinet reacting to where it stands rather than a part on its way out. On a compact cabinet the top of the ranking below is installation and contact, because that is what actually changes, and both cost nothing to rule out.
What you observe
- A rattle that changes when you lean on the cabinet — A foot, a contact or a panel rather than a component.
- A steady hum from the compressor end — Normal in itself; worth attention only if it has changed in pitch or become constant when it used to cycle.
- NEAR MISS: ticking and gurgling shortly after it cycles off — Refrigerant settling and metal contracting, which is normal on every cabinet of this type.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- Something touching the cabinet — A wall, a shelf, a box stacked against the side or a cord trapped behind it. Ranked first on Danby: a compact freezer carries very little margin in its seal, its clearance or its drain, so whatever the installation is straining shows up long before any component wears out, and this line spans bar cabinets to apartment units, all of them designed to go where a full-size appliance would not.

- Pull the cabinet clear of everything and run it — A sound that disappears when the cabinet stands alone was never a fault.

- Listen at the back grille and note whether the sound tracks the compressor — A sound that starts and stops exactly with the compressor is on the condenser side.

- Pull the cabinet clear and clear the top and sides — Leave the clearance the plate specifies and check that no cord or line is pressed against the skin.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before taking any panel off or reaching behind the rear grille, and keep it off while your hands are inside: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off and a condenser fan can start without warning. Do not tape a door or lid switch closed and walk away.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise comes with a loss of cooling, when it is a squeal or chirp from behind an internal panel, or when it is a hard knock rather than a rattle. A rattle with the cabinet still holding temperature is rarely urgent.
