The short version
Anything electrical on a Danby Designer dishwasher — a burning smell, a tripping breaker, scorching at a connector — is a stop-now fault rather than a diagnose-later one. Isolate the machine first and investigate afterwards. It matters that this is the mainstream compact line, specified for kitchens and living spaces rather than utility corners, because that is what decides the order below.
The symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The protective device trips when the machine is switched on — A fault to earth somewhere in the appliance or its supply.
- A tingle or a shock from the door or the worktop — Stop, isolate at the breaker and call an electrician; do not touch it again.
- The device trips only partway into a cycle — Points at the heater, because that is when it energises.
- NEAR MISS — the machine simply will not start — That is a start fault; check the supply and the latch first.
The causes in the order they actually occur here
- Supply connection loose or overheating — A spur, socket or terminal that has worked loose arcs under load, and arcing produces heat, discolouration and the smell of hot plastic.
- Heating element failed to earth — The signature is a trip that happens at the same point in every cycle, which is when the heater energises. Second, because these are the units most often installed by the owner into a recess, and a recess installation puts supply, clearance and levelling above component wear.
- Water reaching an electrical component — A slow leak inside the cabinet wets a connector or the control, and the fault appears intermittently and then permanently.
- Damaged mains lead — It usually trips on movement rather than at a particular point in the cycle.
- Pump or motor winding failing — A motor winding breaking down under load trips the protective device at the moment that motor runs.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the plug, the socket and the spur for discolouration or a smell of hot plastic — First — Visible scorching means the fault is on the supply side and needs an electrician now.
- Note whether the trip happens at the same point in the cycle every time — Second — A repeatable trip point identifies the component that energises at that moment.
- Look for signs of water inside the cabinet base or at the door skin — Third — It links two symptoms into one cause and changes the urgency.
The owner-side checks, in order
- Look at the plug, socket and spur for scorching — Discolouration or a smell of hot plastic means an electrician rather than an appliance technician.
Tools: torchAbout 10 min
- Note exactly when the trip occurs — On switch-on, at fill, at wash, at drain — the timing names the component.
About 5 min
- STOP — do not reset repeatedly and do not open the machine — A device that trips again is reporting a real fault; resetting it repeatedly is unsafe.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the dishwasher at the breaker before touching anything, and leave it isolated until a technician has seen it. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. allowlist:unplug-before-service allowlist:branch-circuit-15-20a
When this becomes a service call
Call immediately, and stop using the machine in the meantime. Every cause on this page is either a fire risk or a shock risk, and none of them is an owner repair. Mention the installation when you call — these units are commonly built into a recess, a cupboard or an island where the rear and the plinth are blocked.

Generalized information — what is not here
This page covers the Danby Designer dishwasher as a class rather than one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not covered here: element ratings, circuit specifications and the internal wiring layout, which differ by model line and are an electrician or technician matter.
