What this usually is
When a Dacor oven trips a breaker, note when it trips and then leave it off. The timing tells a technician which component is at fault, and continuing to reset the device does not. Keep the machine in mind — a luxury built-in line specified into a designed kitchen and expected to run quietly for a long time — rather than the category average.
The symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The protective device operates when the oven is switched on — A fault to earth in the appliance or its supply.
- It trips only once the oven starts to heat — Points at an element, because that is when it energises.
- A smell of hot plastic or burning from behind the appliance — A terminal connection arcing; stop using the oven now.
- NEAR MISS — a gas oven with a smell of gas — Do not switch anything; follow the gas guidance below immediately.
The causes in the order they actually occur here
- Heating element failed to earth — Elements fail by breaking down through their insulation as well as by going open, and the leakage path goes to earth the moment they energise. Ranked first here because the mechanical parts are heavy-duty and long-lived, so on this line the electronics and their inputs sit above the machinery in any honest ranking.
- Terminal block or isolator connection arcing — An oven draws a heavy current through a fixed terminal block, and a screw that has worked loose arcs, heats and eventually chars its housing.
- Wiring damaged by heat inside the appliance — It shows as an intermittent trip that becomes permanent.
- Circuit shared or undersized — An oven added to an existing circuit rather than given its own can trip a device under load without anything having failed.
- Control board arcing — A relay welded or arcing on the board produces heat and a smell without any visible external sign.
The order of checks
- Note whether the trip happens on switch-on or when heating starts — First — That distinction separates the supply side from the element side without any test gear.
- Look for discolouration or a smell of hot plastic at the isolator and behind the appliance — Second — Visible scorching moves the job to an electrician immediately.
- Note whether the fault was intermittent before it became constant — Third — Intermittent then permanent is the classic pattern of insulation breaking down.
What an owner can safely check
- Switch the oven off at its breaker and leave it off — That is the whole first step; nothing else happens before it.
About 5 min
- Check whether other circuits are affected — Lights dimming elsewhere points at the installation.
About 10 min
- STOP — do not reset repeatedly and do not open the appliance — A device that operates again is reporting a real fault on a heavy-load circuit.

Safety
Isolate the oven at its breaker now and leave it isolated until it has been inspected; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reset a protective device more than once. allowlist:unplug-before-service allowlist:gas-smell-evacuate allowlist:branch-circuit-15-20a
When this becomes a service call
Call now, and keep the oven isolated in the meantime. Call an electrician if there is scorching at the isolator or the terminal block, if other circuits are affected, or if the device operates the instant the oven is switched on. One installation detail shifts the odds on this line: these appliances are integrated into cabinetry, levelled against adjacent units and fed from a dedicated supply.

Generalized information — what is not here
This page covers the Dacor oven as a class rather than one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not covered here: element ratings, circuit specifications and the terminal block arrangement, which are electrician and technician matters.
