The short answer
Ice complaints on a D.C.S. refrigerator divide into no ice at all, hollow or small cubes, and ice that fuses into a block. Causes, most likely first on this line
- Water supply shut off, kinked or frozen — The saddle valve behind the unit gets closed during other work and is rarely reopened; a kinked line behind a pushed-back cabinet does the same job. The order of checks
- Trace the line behind the unit and confirm the valve is open and the tube is not pinched — First — It is the single most common cause and it is visible from behind the cabinet.
- Note when the filter was last changed and how the dispenser flow looks — Second — Flow at the dispenser is a direct read on what the ice maker is being offered.
- Check the freezer temperature against the USDA safe freezer temperature with a thermometer — Third — If the compartment is not cold enough, nothing further down the chain matters.
What an owner can safely check
- Confirm the supply valve is open and the line is clear — Pull the unit out, follow the tube, and look for a closed valve or a hard kink.
