The short answer

Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and close the water shut-off before disturbing any fitting on the supply line. Never thaw a fill tube with a heat gun or an open flame, because the liner and the tubing behind it will not survive it. Never chip ice from a plate or a mould with a tool.
When to call a technician
Call once the supply, the temperature and the simple mechanical checks are all clean, because a fill valve or an ice maker module needs a meter and a panel off. Call sooner if you find water where it should not be, since a supply fault that leaks costs more the longer it runs.
