A refrigerator door has one job that matters: keeping warm moist air out. A gasket that has hardened, a door that has dropped, or a cabinet that is not level all cost the same thing — frost, condensation and a compressor that never stops. A cabinet that is not level or is tipped forward is the first thing to suspect on a Crosley, because these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. Cleaning, levelling and gasket reseating are owner work; hinge replacement and door alignment on a heavy cabinet are not.
Signs that fit this page
- The compressor runs almost continuously — A continuous load caused by air exchange rather than by a refrigeration fault.

Causes, most likely first
- A cabinet that is not level or is tipped forward — Ranked first here: these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. These cabinets are designed to sit very slightly tipped back so gravity closes the doors; on an uneven floor they stand forward and the doors do not.
- Door bins loaded heavily, or shelving holding the door open — Ranked second: A bottle in a door bin that catches the shelf edge stops the door closing by a few millimetres, which is enough to frost a cabinet.
- A gasket dirty or sticky enough to stop sealing — Ranked third: Spills and dust in the gasket channel keep it from lying flat, and the same residue makes it drag so the door does not close fully.
- A gasket hardened or torn with age — Ranked fourth, and last: The magnetic strip inside the gasket still pulls, but stiff rubber cannot follow the door face, so it seals at the magnet and gaps between. These platforms run for a long time, so wear is real — but it is slower to arrive than the install faults above it.
Check in this order, and why
- Open a door a hand-span and let go — A door that stays where you left it means the cabinet is standing forward or dead level. It goes first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out and it decides which half of this list you are in.
- Close the door slowly and watch where it meets resistance — An item catching is visible at the moment it happens, and it is the cheapest fault on this page.
- Wipe the gasket with a cloth and look at what comes off — Sticky residue in the folds is common, easily removed, and often the whole fault.

- Adjust the front feet or rollers so the cabinet sits very slightly back, then retest the doors — Check side to side as well; a twisted cabinet shows as an uneven gap at one door corner.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
What needs a technician
Call when the gaskets are clean, the cabinet is level, nothing catches and the banknote test still fails along a whole edge — replacing a gasket or realigning a heavy door is precise work and a poor fit undoes the benefit. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below.
