The short answer

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before reaching past the drum or removing any panel. If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside. A burning smell with a noise means stopping the machine and clearing the vent, because lint is the fuel in almost every dryer fire. The blower wheel keeps turning after the motor stops and its edges are sharp.
When to call a technician
Call once the drum, the level and the duct are all clean and the noise keeps time with the drum or ignores the load entirely, because rollers, belts and motor bearings all need the machine largely dismantled. Stop immediately and call if the noise comes with a burning smell.
