A code or a dead panel on a Criterion dryer usually names a sensor or a thermal device rather than a failed board. Thermal cut-outs open because the machine overheated, and the board reports that honestly; replacing the board without clearing the airflow fault buys nothing. What this looks like from the outside
- The panel is dark but the drum light still works — Partial power, which points at a connector or a board supply rather than the socket. That single observation eliminates more of the list than any amount of guessing.
- Buttons need pressing twice, or the wrong one responds — Membrane wear, which happens gradually and always on the most-used keys first. The value is in eliminating, not confirming; most of these come back negative and that is useful.
- The machine starts and stops repeatedly — A thermal device cycling: it opens on heat, cools, closes again, and the cycle restarts. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.

- A failed main control board — Last, because every cause above it produces the same display and only this one is expensive to get wrong. That single observation eliminates more of the list than any amount of guessing.
