The short answer
On the HD family the usual reason a Criterion refrigerator is making an unfamiliar noise is ice maker fill, harvest and drop, and that is where the order below departs from the brand-generic article one level up: on the through-door dispenser build it outranks water inlet valve and pipe hammer at fill. The check that confirms which build you have is simple — look at the door: a water or ice outlet in the door means an ice maker and a fill line are part of the noise picture. Everything in front of the freezer rear panel — levelling, clearing, seating the pan — is owner work; what sits behind that panel is not.
What you observe on these models
- Single sharp cracks separated by long silences — Expansion and contraction around the defrost cycle. Normal on a frost-free cabinet.
- A gurgle or hiss that fades as the cooling stops — Refrigerant moving. It becomes a fault only when a tube is touching the cabinet.
- A whirring or ticking that stops when the door is opened — The door switch cuts the cabinet fan, so this places the noise inside the food compartment.
- A buzz or rattle that starts and stops with the cooling cycle — It tracks the compressor exactly, which puts it in the machine compartment.
- A clatter from the freezer at intervals with no pattern — Ice dropping into the bin, which surprises people most at night.
- NEAR MISS — the noise comes with a cabinet that is no longer cold — Noise plus warmth is a cooling fault, not a noise fault, and the cooling page is the right one.
Causes, most likely first on the HD family
- Ice maker fill, harvest and drop — Ranked first here: it ranks first on a cabinet with a dispenser because it is the noisiest thing in the appliance and it runs on its own schedule, so the owner rarely connects the sound to the event that caused it.
- Water inlet valve and pipe hammer at fill — Second: the pattern is one short thump, separated by hours, always following the fill buzz. Once the sequence is heard in that order it is unmistakable.
- Drain pan or drip tray rattling on its rails — Third: this is the classic loud-but-harmless noise: a plastic pan resonating over a warm compressor.
- Defrost cycle expansion and the thermal crack — Fourth: several times a day a heater warms the evaporator and everything around it expands, then contracts again.
- Compressor mounts and running hum — Fifth: the compressor is a sealed motor on rubber mounts, and mounts harden with age.
- Condenser fan blade or debris in the machine compartment — Sixth: the second motor in the appliance lives underneath or behind, in an open compartment that collects dust, pet hair and the occasional dropped object.
Check in this order, and why
- Switch the ice maker off for a day — If the noise disappears with it, the cycle was the source and the appliance is healthy.
- Listen for a thump that follows a fill buzz — That sequence puts the noise in the plumbing, not in the appliance.
- Look under the appliance for a shallow pan over the compressor — Seating it by hand settles the loudest and cheapest cause on the list.
- Note whether the noise is continuous or a single crack — Single reports separated by hours are the defrost cycle and need no repair.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the appliance at the plug or the breaker before opening anything, and treat the capacitor as live for a minute after. The door interlock stays connected, always: it stops the fan when the door opens and that is the whole point of it. Stop at once if you see oil at the compressor or the tubing, because the sealed system is open and that is licensed work. Moving a loaded cabinet is a two-person job on a tall unit.

When to call a technician
The line is the panel. Levelling, clearing the compartment, seating the pan and silencing the ice maker are all owner work; anything that requires the freezer rear panel off, or a meter on a fan motor, is not. Bring someone in sooner if the noise is accompanied by warmth in the cabinet, because then the noise is a symptom of the cooling fault and not the fault itself.
