The short answer
A Costway washer that stalls mid-cycle is usually waiting rather than broken, because every stage has a condition it must satisfy before the next one begins. On this class the usual cause is a slow fill, so the machine waits at the fill stage, with a slow drain stopping the cycle from advancing next to rule out.
What you actually observe
- It takes far longer to fill than it used to — Flow has changed and nothing else has.
- It washes but never reaches the spin — Everything before the spin worked, which narrows the list sharply.
- NEAR MISS: the machine never starts at all — That is a different page, with interlocks and supply at the top of its list.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A slow fill, so the machine waits at the fill stage — A closed tap, a kinked hose or a blocked inlet screen leaves the machine waiting for a level it will never reach, and the cycle simply stops advancing. Ranked first on a Costway unit: a machine fed from a tap adaptor gets whatever flow that tap gives it, which is the commonest reason one of these stalls at the fill stage.
- A slow drain stopping the cycle from advancing — No machine moves on from a drain stage until the water is gone, so a partly blocked filter or a kinked hose leaves the cycle apparently frozen in place. Ranked second here: a hose hooked over a sink drains slowly by nature.
- A drum loaded past what the cycle can handle — Ranked third here: a small drum is overloaded at what looks like a modest wash.

Check in this order, and why this order
- Listen at the back for water running and check both taps are fully open — Hot and cold both matter, because a cycle calling for a mix waits for the one it cannot get.
- Look at whether there is water still in the drum at the moment it stalls — Standing water at a stall is a drainage story rather than a control story.
- Look at how full the drum is with the door open — A drum packed to the top cannot tumble, and a load that does not tumble is not being washed.
What an owner can safely check
- Open both taps fully, straighten the hoses and clean the inlet screens with the taps closed — A trickle is as bad as nothing to a machine waiting on a level.

Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before opening a filter or any panel, and close both taps before touching a fill hose. Never defeat a lid or door interlock to make a stalled cycle continue: that interlock is what stops the drum turning with a hand in it. Expect standing water whenever a cycle has stopped mid-way.
When to call a technician
Call once the load, the water, the drain and the detergent are all clean and the machine still stops at the same point, because a level sensor or a control fault needs a meter and the cabinet open. Call sooner if the machine trips its breaker at the stall, since that points at a stalled motor or pump. Bear in mind when you decide that parts for a value import are not stocked locally and a replacement unit can cost less than a part plus a labour call.
