Straight to it
A Contoure dryer that trips a breaker or smells hot should be stopped and left off. On a dryer the dangerous combination is lint and heat: an appliance that runs hot with a restricted duct is the classic laundry-fire scenario, and it does not get better by finishing the load. The order below is what does the work on this page.
What you observe
- A hot or scorched smell from the cabinet — Stop the machine. On a dryer that smell is lint against something hot until proved otherwise. Give it a moment rather than glancing; the thing you are looking for is not always obvious.
- A tingle when you touch the cabinet or the door — Current is finding a path through the casing, which means the earth connection or the insulation has failed. Mention it when you book a visit; it changes which parts a technician brings.
- Browning or heat marks around the plug pins — A poor connection heating under load, which is a fault at the socket rather than inside the machine. Repeat it once if the answer is ambiguous rather than moving on with a maybe.
- Lights dim when the machine starts — A supply that is marginal for the load, which is a wiring question rather than an appliance one. If this is what you have, you are on the right page; if not, follow the near-miss line.
Ranked causes for this machine
- Lint accumulation against a heat source — First because it is the fault with the worst outcome and the easiest cause: lint is fuel, and a restricted duct keeps it near something hot. Mention it when you book a visit; it changes which parts a technician brings.
- Moisture in the cabinet or a damp installation — A laundry room is humid, and moisture across a terminal trips a protective device long before anything burns. Confirming it costs less than assuming it, which is why it is worth the few minutes.
- A worn motor or a stalled blower drawing excess current — A motor that is failing draws more than it should, which trips a breaker without any obvious burning smell. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A shared or undersized circuit — Last, because it is an installation fault rather than an appliance one, but it produces identical symptoms. Where two causes look alike from the outside, this is the one that is more often right.
The elimination order
- Note exactly when the trip happens — On starting, on heating, or at random: each points somewhere different, and it is the one thing only you can observe. The position matters more than the name: work the order rather than the one you have heard of.
- Smell the cabinet and the vent outlet — A hot-lint smell and a hot-plastic smell mean different things, and both mean stop. Note the result even if it is negative, because a ruled-out cause is progress.
- Check whether other appliances share the circuit — A circuit carrying more than it should trips without any appliance being faulty. Eliminate it properly before moving down; a half-checked cause comes back later.
The homeowner checks
- Switch the machine off at the breaker and leave it off — This is the first and most important owner action. The value is in eliminating, not confirming; most of these come back negative and that is useful.
About 5 min
- Unplug the machine and inspect the plug and socket — Look for browning, melting and loose pins. Work slowly enough that you can put everything back the way it was.
Tools: torchAbout 15 min
- Write down what the machine was doing at the moment of the trip — Programme, elapsed time and whether heat had started: that note is the most useful thing you can hand a technician. It is the sort of check a technician does first, for the same reason.
About 10 min
- Stop here if the next step would put a meter on live terminals — Everything beyond here belongs to somebody with a meter and the habit of using it properly.

Safety
Isolate the machine at the plug or the breaker before you open it. Some components hold energy after isolation, which is why service manuals say to wait. On a gas model, close the appliance shut-off valve before you start, and if you smell gas, leave the building and call the utility from outside. The switches that sense the door stay exactly as they are.
The line between a fix and a call
Where the owner side ends: isolating, inspecting the plug and clearing lint are yours; everything that involves a meter, an element, a motor or the earth connection is not. The boundary is the same whether you are handy or not. Get help immediately if a gas model will not light cleanly, and leave the building first if there is any smell of gas.
