The short answer
An ice maker that has stopped is answering one of three questions with a no: is it cold enough to harvest, is water arriving, and is the mechanism turning. On these models WMS is one long code with a finish block on the end. Working them in that order matters, because the first is the commonest and the third is the only one that costs anything.
What you observe
- No ice at all and an empty bin — Either the harvest never runs or water never arrives. The mould tells you which.
- Small or hollow cubes — Water is arriving but not enough of it, which points at supply pressure or a partly frozen fill line.
- A block of frozen cubes fused together — Ice that melted and refroze, which is a temperature story rather than a maker fault.
- Water in the mould that never freezes into cubes — The freezer is not reaching the temperature the harvest needs.
- NEAR MISS — the whole cabinet is warm as well — Then this is a cooling fault and the ice maker is only the first thing you noticed.
Causes, most likely first on the WMS models
- Freezer not cold enough to harvest — First on these models. The harvest is temperature-triggered, so a freezer sitting above its target makes no ice at all while looking otherwise healthy.
- Shutoff arm or switch left off — Second, and the cheapest thing on the list. An arm knocked up by a bag, or a switch turned off during a clean, stops production completely and looks like a failure.
- Water supply, valve or a frozen fill line — Third. A closed isolating valve, a kinked supply line or a fill tube that has frosted over all starve the mould, and the fill tube is the one that recurs.
- Door left ajar or a seal failing — Fourth. Humidity walking into the freezer is what frosts a fill tube in the first place, so this cause sits behind the one above it.
- Ice maker module or motor — Last. When it is cold enough, the arm is down and water is arriving, the mechanism is the remaining answer and it is not owner work. No counted corpus covers these models, so this ranks mechanisms rather than measured shares.
Check in this order, and why
- Settle the variant question first, which here takes no time — The model table on this page holds a single stem, so there is no branch to resolve and no step below is conditional on which unit you own.
- Check the shutoff arm or switch first — It costs nothing and it resolves a real share of these complaints on the spot.
- Judge the freezer temperature before anything else mechanical — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and a maker will not harvest properly above its own target.
- Look into the mould and at the fill tube — Water present means supply is fine and the fault is downstream. A frosted tube is visible and is a recurring cause.
- Check the isolating valve and the line behind the cabinet — A valve half closed when the unit was last moved gives small cubes rather than none, which is the confusing case.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never clear ice from a mould or a fill tube with a blade or a screwdriver, because the tubing and the heater behind them puncture easily. Do not put a heat gun to a fill tube: warm water and patience clear the same blockage without melting anything that matters.

When to call a technician
Call when the freezer is at temperature, the arm is down, water reaches the mould and no ice is made, because what is left is the module and its wiring. Call sooner if the fill tube refreezes within days of being cleared, which points at a door or seal fault feeding it. Call at once if water is escaping from the supply connection behind the cabinet. With a single stem in the table there is no second build to compare against, so a technician works from the same order you just did.
