What you are actually seeing
- Small, hollow or half-formed cubes
- Ice with an odour or a taste
- Not this fault: No ice in a cabinet that has no ice maker fitted
Ranked causes on a Conservator refrigerator
- Water inlet valve failing electrically or restricted — Ranked here because: this platform is mechanical by design, so wear parts and couplings fail as parts rather than as symptoms of a board
- Ice maker module, motor or thermostat failed — Ranked here because: there is very little electronics on this line, so a board is the last thing to accuse rather than the first
- Freezer not cold enough for the harvest to run — Ranked here because: the temperature control is a mechanical thermostat, which either makes contact or does not — it is a quick, decisive check
- Water supply closed, kinked or at low pressure — Ranked here because: these machines are commonly installed by the owner or the delivering dealer, and levelling and venting errors are the most frequent finding
- Fill tube frozen — Ranked here because: the gasket is the cheapest thing on the machine to get wrong and the easiest to confirm
- Ice maker switched off or the feeler arm lifted — Ranked here because: a simple machine gives the owner more ways to load and dose it wrong, and those show up as faults
What to check, and in what order
- Dispense water for ten seconds and judge the flow, or check the mould for a recent fill
- Change the water filter and purge several litres through the dispenser
- Empty the bin and look at the fill tube outlet at the back of the freezer for a plug of ice
- Empty the bin completely, check for a wedged cube at the ejector and refit the bin fully
Steps you can safely do yourself
- Empty the bin and look at the fill tube outlet at the back of the freezer for a plug of ice — Tools: flashlight — Estimated time: a few minutes
- Empty the bin completely, check for a wedged cube at the ejector and refit the bin fully — Tools: none — Estimated time: about ten minutes
- Confirm the ice maker is switched on and the feeler arm is down and free to move — Tools: none — Estimated time: a couple of minutes
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after an hour — Tools: appliance thermometer — Estimated time: about an hour

When to call a technician
the mould fills and freezes but the harvest never turns, which is a module replacement the inlet valve or the supply line needs work behind the cabinet the freezer will not reach its temperature, since that is a cooling fault and not an ice one
