The short answer
On a Conservator dryer this complaint is usually the door switch rather than the failure owners fear, and where it is not, the outlet, the lead or the breaker takes most of the rest. A full-size dryer runs on its own heavy circuit and vents through fixed ducting in the wall, which means most of what goes wrong with it is somewhere in the house rather than in the appliance. That order is what this page is for, because working it the other way round is how an afternoon gets spent on the least likely cause.
What you observe
- Nothing happens at all when you press start — Start at the door switch and the outlet.
- Cycles taking two or three times as long — A restriction somewhere in the air path.

Causes, most likely first on this brand
- The door switch — Top of the list here: nothing runs with the door reading open, and the switch is a small plastic part struck by the door every single cycle.
- The outlet, the lead or the breaker — Second here: before anything inside the machine is suspected, it is worth proving the machine is actually being fed - which on a dryer takes one minute.
- The start control not being held or the cycle not selected — Third, and worth the two minutes: many machines want the start held for a moment and will do nothing at all otherwise, which reads as a dead appliance.

- Open and close the door and listen for the click — Nothing else on the machine can run until this reports closed.
- Test the outlet and the breaker — One minute, and everything below it assumes the machine is being fed.
- Press and hold the start control — It costs a second and clears the least mechanical cause on the list.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing the lint housing, the rear panel or anything else - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never run the machine with the lint filter out or the door interlock defeated. If yours is a gas model and you smell gas at any point: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Call when the door clicks shut, the breaker is on and cycled, the start control has been held and the machine is still silent. Mention if it stopped suddenly after a spell of slow drying, because that names a thermal fuse and the blocked duct behind it, and both need doing at once.
