It sits above the more dramatic explanations because it is the one you are statistically likelier to have.
- A failed heating element — Common on older machines and the one genuine component failure in the list, but it is diagnosed after the air path rather than before it. Write it down before anybody comes out; a described symptom is worth more than a remembered one.
- A failed thermostat or thermal fuse — These parts open permanently once they have done their job, so the machine stays cold until the part is replaced and the cause cleared. Confirming it costs less than assuming it, which is why it is worth the few minutes.
