The short answer
A Conservator VDGW dryer that tumbles without drying has either lost its heat source or lost the airflow that carries heat through the load, and the two are distinguishable in minutes. The brand-generic page starts by separating no heat from poor drying; that division still governs, and this family sets what follows it. On the gas build the heat side of the ranking becomes an ignition sequence — igniter, flame sensing, gas valve coils — and that sequence is observable through the burner port, which is what moves it to the top of the checks here.
What you observe
- The drum turns and the load comes out cold and wet — No heat at all, which points at the heat source or its thermal protection.
- The load is warm but takes several cycles to dry — Heat is present and airflow is not: moisture is being warmed rather than carried away.
- The cabinet and the room get hot while the machine runs — Heat that is not leaving the machine, which is restriction rather than a heating fault.
- NEAR MISS — no heat and no tumble at all — That is a start, door switch or thermal fuse fault, and it belongs on the will-not-start page.
Causes, most likely first on the VDGW models
- Restricted vent, duct or outside hood — First on this family and first by a distance. Airflow does the drying; heat only prepares the air. A machine that cannot exhaust warms the load, warms the room and never finishes, while every component in it tests perfectly.
- Lint filter and internal lint path — Second. A filter that looks clean can still be blinded by a film from dryer sheets, and the path between the filter housing and the blower collects lint that no routine cleaning reaches.
- The heat source named by the plate letter — Ranked here and split by the plate letter, which is what this family table separates. On the gas build it is an ignition sequence — igniter, flame sensing, valve coils — and the sequence is observable through the burner port before anything is removed.
- Thermal fuse or cut-out tripped — Third. On many machines a tripped thermal fuse stops the heat while leaving the drum turning, which produces the cold-and-wet complaint exactly. It trips because of the first two causes, so replacing it alone repeats the fault.
- Thermostats, timer or control — Last. Worth reaching only once airflow, lint and thermal protection are all confirmed good.
Check in this order, and why
- Establish the heat letter on the plate first — Watch one full ignition attempt through the burner port before touching anything. The sequence tells you which half of the gas train to suspect and it cannot be recovered after you start pulling panels.
- Feel the exhaust at the outside hood while the machine runs — A strong warm flow means airflow is fine and the question is the heat source. Weak or cool flow means the vent is the fault, whatever the machine is doing internally.
- Clean the filter and then look into the filter housing — The housing collects what the filter misses and it is rarely cleaned at all.
- Disconnect the duct at the machine and run a short cycle — If it heats and dries properly venting into the room, the duct run is the fault and nothing inside the machine needs touching.
- Only then consider the heat source and its protection — By this point the common causes are eliminated, which is what makes a heat-source diagnosis meaningful.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Anything past the burner port on this build is licensed gas work and is not owner work at any stage. Never run the machine vented into the room for more than the few minutes of a diagnostic test, and never run it with a panel off. Clear the lint path completely while you have access: restricted airflow plus a heat source is the exact condition behind dryer fires, which is why this fault is worth fixing rather than working around.

When to call a technician
Call once the vent has been confirmed clear end to end and the machine still will not heat, because what remains is the heat source and its protection behind the cabinet. Anything past the burner port is licensed work on this build. Observing the sequence is owner work; opening the gas train is not. On this gas build, call at the burner: observing an ignition attempt is owner work and opening the gas train is not.
