The short answer
A Conservator NTX dryer that will not start divides immediately into two cases: one where nothing happens at all, which is power or a door switch, and one where the machine responds but will not run, which is the start circuit or a protective device. The brand-generic page draws that line first, and this family decides what to check within each branch. This family is an electric and a gas build of one cabinet, so the heat side of the ranking splits on the plate letter while the mechanical side does not move at all. Read the letter before you read any symptom about heat.
What you observe
- Completely dead: no lights, no sound, no response — A supply question. A dryer runs on a heavy circuit and can lose one leg while the house is otherwise fine.
- Lights and a panel response, but nothing turns — The start circuit, the door switch or a protective device, not the supply.
- A hum when start is pressed but no drum movement — The motor is receiving power and not turning, which points at the start winding or a mechanical obstruction.
- It starts only when the door is held firmly shut — A door switch that is no longer making reliably, and that is the whole fault.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but does not heat — That is a heating fault, and it belongs on the heating page rather than here.
Causes, most likely first on the NTX models
- Door switch not making — First on this family. It is a small switch taking heavy use, it wears, and the classic symptom is a machine that starts if the door is pressed hard and not otherwise.
- Supply, breaker or a lost leg — Second. A dryer circuit can lose one of its two legs and leave a machine that is completely dead, or that tumbles without heat, depending on which leg went.
- Start switch or motor start circuit — Fourth. A hum without movement is the signature, and it separates this from everything above, all of which produce silence.
- Heat-side protection on this build — Here because this family is split by the plate letter. On the electric build the same protective devices sit near the element, and an open one commonly stops the machine entirely rather than only the heating.
- Broken belt or a seized drum — Last. A broken belt lets the motor run freely with no drum movement and no noise beyond the motor itself, which is a quite different sound from a hum under load.
Check in this order, and why
- Establish the heat letter on the plate first — Identify the heat letter on the plate first. On the gas row the ignition sequence is the first thing to observe; on the electric row it is the element circuit, and the two share no parts.
- Decide whether the machine is dead or merely refusing — Any light or beep means the supply is present and the question is inside. Complete silence sends you to the breaker first.
- Press the door firmly shut and try again — A machine that starts this way has told you the door switch is the fault, and no further diagnosis is needed.
- Check the breaker, including resetting both halves of a double breaker — A lost leg is invisible from the panel face and a full reset is the quick way to rule it out.
- Listen carefully when start is pressed — Silence points at the switch chain and the fuse; a hum points at the motor start circuit; a free-running motor points at the belt.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolate at the breaker rather than at any switch on the machine, and treat the terminal block behind the machine as live until the breaker is off. Do not tape or wedge the door switch closed to make the machine run: it is what stops the drum with the door open. Do not bypass a thermal fuse; it opened for a reason and that reason is a restriction that has not gone away.

When to call a technician
Call when the door, the supply and the obvious protective devices have all been checked and the machine still will not turn. On the gas build anything past the gas valve is a licensed job. On the electric build the same rule applies to the element circuit once a panel has to come off. Call rather than persist if the machine trips its breaker on start, or if it hums without turning, since both point past the free checks into the motor circuit.
