Start with water and temperature
Before ordering anything for a Comptree Inc cabinet that has stopped making ice, answer two questions: is the maker switched on, and is the compartment actually cold enough to harvest? Those two account for most no-ice complaints, they cost nothing, and they are the two a technician asks about on the telephone. The MXBC designation spans five model numbers in the table below. Which one you have decides the part number, not the repair — the fault below is the same across the line.
What you actually observe
- Production fell off gradually over weeks — Restriction rather than failure: a filter reaching the end of its life, or a line slowly icing.
- A block of ice in the mould — Overfill, or a harvest that did not complete. Either way the maker is stuck until it is cleared.
- Cubes that are cloudy and small together — Low flow and long dwell, which points at the supply rather than at the maker.
- Nothing since the cabinet was moved — A crushed supply line behind the unit is the classic consequence of pushing it back into place.
- NEAR MISS — water in the bin rather than ice — That is a temperature problem in the compartment, and it needs fixing before the maker is touched.
Most likely first
- A frozen fill tube — Ranked first on cabinets of this class because it is common and highly visible: a plug of ice at the end of the tube stops the fill without any part having failed.
- Filter and flow — Second. An overdue or unseated cartridge drops flow enough to give hollow, undersized cubes long before it stops production entirely.
- Temperature in the compartment — Third. Check what the ice cream is doing: soft ice cream and no ice is a temperature fault, firm ice cream and no ice is a water or maker fault.
- Module and mould heater — Last. A maker that harvests continuously without filling, or fills without harvesting, has an internal fault, and that is where a technician starts.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Separate no ice from bad ice — Nothing at all points at supply, the switch or temperature. Small or hollow cubes point at restricted flow, which is a different and cheaper list.
- Check behind the cabinet for a kinked line — Pushing a unit back into place after cleaning is the classic way to crush a supply line.
- Defrost if the compartment is iced up — Frost across the compartment stops the maker as a side effect, so it has to be dealt with first.
- Then call with the cycle observation — Fills but never harvests, harvests but never fills, or does nothing at all — each sends the technician to a different part.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not thaw a frozen fill tube with a heat gun, a hair dryer on full or boiling water poured into the compartment: the plastic distorts, and a distorted tube leaks into the cabinet afterwards. If you close a household shut-off valve to work on the supply, open it again slowly and check the joint for weeping before pushing the cabinet back.

Where the owner line is on these models
Stop and call when the diagnosis needs a meter rather than a torch. Anything on the water path in front of the cabinet, anything on the settings, and anything involving the compartment being too warm is owner territory. The inlet valve, the module, the mould heater and the thermostat are not: they are behind panels on a live appliance, and on small cabinets the parts are often worth more than the ice is. The five models listed share this diagnosis but not their part numbers, so have the rating plate to hand before the visit is booked.
