Diagnose noise by location
A new noise is worth investigating and an old one usually is not. On a Commercial Cool cabinet the sounds that deserve attention are a fan clipping frost inside, a relay clicking without a start, and a hum that has deepened as the cabinet warmed. Everything else — gurgle, trickle, tick, pop — is the system doing what it does. The CCRRD designation spans three model numbers in the table below. Which one you have decides the part number, not the repair — the fault below is the same across the line.
What you actually observe
- Loud hum that has become noticeably louder — A compressor working harder against a blocked coil sounds different, so noise can be the first sign of a cooling fault.
- Sound stops if you lift a corner of the cabinet — Level the unit properly with the feet rather than shimming it and leaving it rocking.
- Buzzing that started after the unit was moved — A line has been pushed against the shell or a foot has been left unwound.
- Intermittent knock every few hours — The compressor starting and stopping against soft mounts. Worth watching, not worth panicking over.
- NEAR MISS — noise plus a warm cabinet — Then the cooling fault is the page you want; noise is the symptom, not the problem.
Where the noise usually comes from
- Vibration finding a partner — First, because a compressor that vibrates is a compressor working normally — the fault is what it is touching.
- A door switch that has stopped stopping the fan — Second. A fan running against a closed door is expected; a fan running with the door open means the switch has failed and the cabinet is losing cold air to it.
- Ice, debris and bearings — Third, and the group that matters: anything from inside the cabinet that grinds, ticks or whirrs deserves a defrost and then a look.
- Stalled compressor starts — Last by frequency, first by urgency. Repeated clicking without a run damages the compressor, so it is a stop-and-call condition rather than a wait-and-see one.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Note whether it is constant or cyclic — A noise that follows the compressor cycle is mechanical; a noise that appears once every several hours is usually the defrost system.
- Press-test the panels while it runs — Gentle pressure at the sides and back. A rattle that stops under your hand is resonance and needs packing or levelling, not parts.
- Pull the unit out and listen again — Noise that halves when the cabinet is away from the wall was never a fault in the first place.
- Escalate anything metallic or new — A fan bearing, a compressor mount or a relay. All are behind panels on a live cabinet, so that is where owner work ends.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Levelling the cabinet, checking clearance, reseating a drip tray and listening at the door need no panel off at all. Do not put your hand into a compressor compartment or near a fan blade on a running unit, and treat moving a full cabinet as a two-person job rather than a shove.
