On a Commercial Chef microwave, check the outlet before anything else: these ovens are often on a switched socket behind a cabinet that somebody has turned off. After that it is the door, then the panel. Read the near-miss line in the symptoms first if you are not sure you are on the right page.
Signs, including the misleading ones
- The display works but pressing start does nothing — Power is present; the oven is refusing rather than dead, which usually means the door. Note whether it happens every time or only sometimes, because that distinction narrows the list.
- The door needs a firm push before the oven responds — A door catch or hinge that is no longer holding the door square. Repeat it once if the answer is ambiguous rather than moving on with a maybe.
- The oven runs for a moment and stops — Something is dropping out, often the door confirmation or thermal protection after earlier heavy use. Compare it with how the machine behaved a month ago rather than with how you expect it to behave.
- NEAR MISS: it runs but food stays cold — That is a heating fault rather than a start fault, and it belongs on the heating page. This is the cheapest information available on the machine.

- No power at the socket — First because microwave ovens are routinely on a switched or hidden socket, and because it costs nothing to check. It sits above the more dramatic explanations because it is the one you are statistically likelier to have.
- A door that is not closing squarely — Second because the door confirmation is mandatory and mechanical, and a sagging door stops it being made. That single observation eliminates more of the list than any amount of guessing.
- A worn start key or membrane — The most-used key wears first, which produces a panel that lights and an oven that will not start. Confirming it costs less than assuming it, which is why it is worth the few minutes.
- A door interlock that has failed — A proper fault, but one that lives behind the case and is not owner work in this appliance. If this is what you have, you are on the right page; if not, follow the near-miss line.

- Check for a switched socket behind the cabinet — Built-in and over-range ovens are commonly fed from a socket nobody can see. It takes less time than reading about it.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the catch — A definite click is what the oven waits for; a soft close leaves it waiting. If this is the cause, the evidence for it is usually visible rather than inferred.
- Let the oven stand with the door open for a while — If thermal protection has operated, cooling is the whole of the repair. This is the cheapest information available on the machine.
