When a Commercial Chef microwave shows an electrical symptom, the useful distinction is inside the cavity versus behind the case. Cavity problems you can see and often solve; anything behind the case holds stored energy and belongs to somebody with the training for it. Everything here assumes the machine is behaving now rather than intermittently.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A burning or hot-electrical smell — Stop immediately and unplug. Doing it in this order is what keeps the diagnosis short.
- A loud hum with no heating — A high-voltage component failing. Nothing an owner can act on except to stop using it. If this is what you have, you are on the right page; if not, follow the near-miss line.
- Scorch marks on the cavity wall or the waveguide cover — A damaged cover concentrates energy at one point and makes the arcing worse each time. A result here decides whether the next two checks are worth doing at all.
- The plug or socket is hot to the touch — A connection problem at the outlet rather than in the appliance, and it needs attention either way. If this is what you have, you are on the right page; if not, follow the near-miss line.
The order of suspicion
- Metal or foil inside the cavity — First because it is by far the commonest cause of arcing and because it is entirely visible once you look. Note whether it happens every time or only sometimes, because that distinction narrows the list.
- A failing high-voltage component behind the case — The classic cause of a breaker trip at start, and the reason the case stays closed. Confirming it costs less than assuming it, which is why it is worth the few minutes.
- A door interlock reporting incorrectly — The interlocks are what prove the door is shut; a faulty one can trip protection, and it is never owner-serviceable. Write it down before anybody comes out; a described symptom is worth more than a remembered one.
- A cooling fan blocked so the oven overheats — Last, because it takes time to develop: restricted vents raise the internal temperature until protection operates. It sits above the more dramatic explanations because it is the one you are statistically likelier to have.
How to narrow it down
- Unplug the oven before looking at anything — It is the whole of the owner safety procedure in this appliance, and it takes one second. Nothing below this line is worth chasing until this one is ruled out.
- Look inside the cavity with a torch — Scorch marks, a burned waveguide cover and metal trim on crockery are all visible from the doorway. Doing it in this order is what keeps the diagnosis short.
- Feel the plug and look at the socket — Discolouration or a warm plug means the connection needs attention regardless of the oven. Nothing below this line is worth chasing until this one is ruled out.

- Unplug the oven and leave it unplugged — Do not run it again to see whether it repeats. The value is in eliminating, not confirming; most of these come back negative and that is useful.

- Remove any metal from the cavity and check the crockery — Foil, metal trim on plates, twist ties and skewers all arc. Have a towel to hand before you start.

- Clean the cavity walls and the roof — Warm soapy water and a cloth, removing carbonised residue that acts as a starting point for arcing. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.
