What this usually is
On a Commercial Care washer the drain path is short and entirely reachable: filter, pump, hose, standpipe. Three of those four are owner-checkable with a towel and ten minutes. The checks are ordered so the cheap ones eliminate the expensive ones.
How it presents
- The cycle ends with water still in the drum — The machine could not reach its empty level, so it stopped rather than spinning a full tub. A result here decides whether the next two checks are worth doing at all.
- A buzzing from the base with no water moving — The pump is energised and obstructed, which is a blockage rather than a failure. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.
- The machine will not spin — Spinning a tub full of water is prevented deliberately, so no drain means no spin. Give it a moment rather than glancing; the thing you are looking for is not always obvious.
- NEAR MISS: it drains but leaves clothes soaking — That is a spin fault rather than a drain fault, and it points at balance or the motor. Compare it with how the machine behaved a month ago rather than with how you expect it to behave.
What causes it, in order of likelihood
- A blocked drain filter — First and by a wide margin: it is designed to catch debris and it is the part owners are least likely to have opened. Time it roughly, as the pattern matters more than the exact interval.
- A kinked, trapped or raised outlet hose — A machine pushed back crushes its own hose, and a hose pushed too far into a standpipe siphons or blocks. It sits above the more dramatic explanations because it is the one you are statistically likelier to have.
- A blocked standpipe or sink waste — The fault is outside the machine entirely, which is why water backing up at the waste is a useful observation. Check whether anything changed in the house around the time it started.
- A failed drain pump — Last, because a pump that has actually failed is silent rather than buzzing, and everything above it is more common. It belongs in the order here because the check for it is cheap and the answer is unambiguous.
The order that saves time
- Listen at the base during the drain phase — A buzz means power is reaching the pump and something is stopping it: blockage rather than failure. If this is the cause, the evidence for it is usually visible rather than inferred.
- Open the drain filter and look at what comes out — The contents tell you the story: coins and hair mean the filter was the fault. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.
- Note whether the problem started after a heavy dose of detergent — Suds-related drain failures follow dosing changes and clear when the dose comes down. Nothing below this line is worth chasing until this one is ruled out.

- Drain the machine through the filter access — Towel on the floor, shallow dish under the cap, open a quarter turn at a time and empty the dish repeatedly. It is the sort of check a technician does first, for the same reason.

- Clean the filter and check the impeller turns — Rinse the trap, then reach in and turn the impeller by hand with the power off to confirm nothing is jammed. Give the machine a full cycle afterwards before judging whether it worked.

- Clear the standpipe or sink waste — A bucket of hot water and a plunger on the waste deals with the common household blockages that stop a machine draining. Do it with the machine in its normal state rather than after you have already changed something.

What has to be off
Safety
Disconnect the machine from the mains before any part of this, without exception. An isolated appliance can still have charge in it, and that is the reason for the pause. On a gas model, close the appliance shut-off valve before you start, and if you smell gas, leave the building and call the utility from outside. Keep every safety switch in circuit, in the state the factory left it.
The handover point
One rule decides it: if the water can be reached with a towel and a dish, do it; if the pump has to come out, call somebody. The split is worth respecting even when the part looks simple. Call straight away if you smell scorching, see browning around a terminal, or find lint packed against a heat source.
