Straight answer first
Ice on the Comfort Time SMCF platform needs two conditions: water arriving, and a compartment cold enough to freeze it — and the second fails more often here. Where a model does have an automatic ice maker, it is a compact module with a narrow fill path. That is why the checks below start with the cold rather than with the ice maker itself.
What the owner sees and hears
- Ice that comes out thin — Small cubes with the usual noise point at how much water arrived.
- The freezer section itself feels soft — If the food is soft, the ice maker is a bystander — the cooling side is the problem.
- Something blocking the sensor — A bin pushed in at an angle holds the arm up all day.
- No ice at all, no cycle noise — Listen over a full day before concluding — a compact module cycles only a few times a day.
- NEAR MISS — the fresh-food side is warm too — That is a cooling failure and it has its own page; ice is only the earliest symptom of it.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Too little cold at the ice tray — First on this family because the compartment is shallow with little reserve, and ice is the first thing to suffer when it drifts.
- The bin pressing on the arm — A total stop with no noise is usually this, and it is free to rule out.
- A dribbling supply that froze in the tube — Where the model fills itself, this is the usual blockage — it is narrow, cold, and unforgiving of a weak supply.
- Cold air stalled inside the freezer section — It ranks above the mechanism because unpacking the freezer is free and it explains slow ice completely.
What to check first, second, third
- Put a thermometer next to the ice tray overnight — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and ice production needs that same depth of cold — so this is the check that decides which half of the page applies.
- Clear the freezer section and look for frost over the vents — On these compartments one badly placed package is enough to close the path.
- Check the shut-off arm or sensor position — Pull the bin out and reseat it square, then listen for a cycle within the hour.
Safety first, and it is not optional

Pull the plug first. The module can start a cycle at any time, and it does not announce itself. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below — if the compartment is not holding that, the food is the first concern. Never pry ice loose with a blade: the mould and the tubing behind it puncture easily.

When this stops being a DIY job
Call when the compartment will not hold temperature after the free checks, because that is a cooling fault rather than an ice fault. A module that grinds needs to be stopped and inspected before the motor fails from it.
