Straight answer first
On the Coldspot SMFU platform, water on the floor means the defrost drain first and plumbing only after that. On a compact unit the pan holds very little, so anything that raises the water rate overflows it rather than evaporating it. The order below is built on that split, and it keeps you out of the back of the machine until it is warranted.
What you actually observe
- Water collecting in the liner — That is a blocked drain nine times out of ten, with the water backing up where it should be leaving.
- Water only appears after a defrost — Time the puddles against the machine rather than against your day — the interval is the clue.
- A puddle just outside the door — Open the door and look at the base of the compartment — that is where this leak starts.
- The puddle grows when the room is humid — Condensate volume tracks the room, so a seasonal leak is melt water rather than plumbing.
- NEAR MISS — the ice is wet or fused, floor is dry — If the floor is dry, this is not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on the SMFU line
- The drain hole closed with debris — It ranks top because the failure is slow, silent and certain — a year of food film closes a hole this size.
- A cracked mould or fill cup — Ranked below the drain because the symptom is contained inside the compartment until it is badly neglected.
- Supply line or fitting weeping — Where a line exists it ranks here because the joints are the part most often damaged during cleaning.
- Evaporation tray cracked, displaced or overflowing — A tray that simply overflows is usually reporting a cause above it: more water is arriving than normal.
What to check first, second, third
- Find the drain hole and check whether it is clear — Flush it gently with warm water and watch whether it takes — a drain that holds water is your answer.
- Pull the unit out and look at the evaporation tray — Look for a crack, a tilt, or a tray sitting off its rails rather than just for water.
- Look at how the unit sits on its feet — Second because it is free and instant and it decides whether backed-up water reaches the floor.
- Work around the gasket looking for gaps — Test all four sides: failure is local and the hinge side is usually the one missed.
Safety first, and it is not optional

Treat the water damage as the first problem and the leak as the second. If you find a supply-line leak, close the tap before touching the joint and check the joint again afterwards. A cabinet with water under it can slip, so clear and dry before pulling it out.
