The short answer

- It starts, hesitates and then stops with the drum empty — A fill that never completed. The machine gave up waiting for water rather than failing to run.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and fills but never agitates or spins — That is a drive or a cycle fault rather than a no-start, and it belongs on the cycle page.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- The lid or door lock not confirming — First. It is the single condition every wash cycle checks before anything else, so a lock that cannot confirm produces a machine that is electrically healthy and completely inert.
- Water supply taps closed, or inlet screens blocked — Second, and the one owners skip. A machine that cannot fill waits, then stops, and many models give no obvious message about it. Taps get closed after a leak scare and never reopened, and the screens at the inlet valve silt up in hard-water areas.
- No power at the outlet, or a tripped protection device — Third, and it is the whole story whenever the panel is dark. A washer shares its space with water, so protection devices trip there more often than elsewhere in a house.
- A setting: delay start, child lock, or a paused cycle — Fourth. Every one of these makes a working machine look broken, and every one of them is cleared from the panel. They are ranked here because they cost nothing to rule out and because they are genuinely common.
- The control board, the motor or a thermal overload — Last. It is the expensive answer and the least likely one, which is exactly why the order above exists.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the panel first — Lit means the control has power and the machine is waiting for a condition; dark means the supply. The two paths share nothing, and starting on the wrong one wastes the whole diagnosis.
- Clear delay start, child lock and any paused cycle — Cancel the program completely and start a short cycle from scratch. This costs nothing and it settles a real share of no-start calls.
- Test the socket with another appliance — Only relevant when the panel is dark, and it separates a dead machine from a dead circuit in seconds. Laundry outlets trip more often than most.
Before you open anything
Safety
Disconnect power at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close both taps before disturbing a hose, and expect the hose to hold water after the tap is shut. Never bypass or tape a lid switch or a door lock to make a machine run — the lock stops the drum being reached while it is moving.

When to call a technician
