The answer first
Everything runs and nothing gets hot: on a Chefman microwave that combination points at the part of the machine an owner must not open. That puts a power level or programme setting at the top of the list here and too much food, or food straight from the freezer at the bottom.
What you observe
- A loud buzz with no heating — A transformer or capacitor fault; stop using the machine.
- The machine heats only on some power levels — Power levels cycle the magnetron on and off, so this points at the control side.
- NEAR MISS — food heats unevenly with cold centres — That is loading and standing time rather than a fault.
The ranking
- A power level or programme setting — A machine left on a low power level heats slowly and reads as broken. It costs nothing to check first. Ranked here because on a countertop machine the control side is what the environment attacks — heat, steam and constant wiping — so it is checked before anything deeper.
- The magnetron or its high-voltage circuit — The magnetron, its transformer, capacitor or diode. It is the commonest cause of this exact symptom and none of it is owner-serviceable. It ranks here because it explains the symptom fully but needs a little more looking than the ones above it.
- An interlock that permits running but not heating — The interlock chain allows some functions while blocking the magnetron. The door on a countertop machine is opened dozens of times a day and carries the interlocks, so the door is where the wear is.
- Too much food, or food straight from the freezer — Microwaves heat by volume; a large cold load takes much longer than owners expect.
The diagnostic order
- Check the power level setting first — It is free and it explains a real share of these complaints.
- Heat a cup of water for a minute and feel it — A controlled test tells you whether there is any heating at all.
- Check the clearance and the vents around the cabinet — A machine boxed into a shelf recirculates its own hot air.
- Run two short water tests back to back — Heating on the first and not the second points at a thermal cut-out.
The owner-side procedure
- Unplug for a few minutes and retry once — It clears a stuck control state, which is the only owner-fixable version of this.
- Give the machine its stated clearance and retest — Pull it clear of the wall and any shelf above it before running the test again.
- Let the machine stand unplugged for an hour, then retest — A thermal device that has opened may reset once the cabinet cools.
- STOP — the high-voltage circuit is never an owner repair — The capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the machine is unplugged.

Safety
Arcing inside the cavity means stop, unplug and stop using the machine until it has been checked. Never operate it with the waveguide cover missing, and never open the cabinet — the capacitor holds its charge after the supply is gone.
Where the owner side ends
Call as soon as a power-level check and a water test confirm no heating. The magnetron, transformer, capacitor and diode are all technician work, and the capacitor makes it genuinely dangerous otherwise. Call immediately for arcing, a burning smell or a loud buzz.
