The door is the safety system on a microwave, not a cosmetic panel. On a Cascade Meadows microwave anything wrong with it is treated as a stop-and-check. That puts worn or broken latch tabs at the top of the list here and a loose or worn hinge at the bottom.
What you observe
- The door does not close flush — A hinge or a latch problem, and it affects the seal.
- A bent door, a cracked panel or damaged seal surface — Stop using the machine until it has been checked.
- The machine runs briefly then stops — An interlock dropping out mid-cycle.
- NEAR MISS — the light stays on with the door closed — That is a switch fault too, but it is the same family of causes.
The causes, ordered
- Worn or broken latch tabs — Plastic tabs operate the interlock switches. They wear, break and stop the machine running, and they are the commonest door fault by far. First on a badged machine because the door hardware is the lowest-cost assembly in the build and it is the assembly that takes every open and close.
- Grease and crumbs in the latch recesses — Enough residue stops a tab reaching its switch. It is free to fix and easy to miss. The door carries the switches and the interlocks, so a door fault presents as a whole-machine fault.
- A sagging hinge or a twisted door — Usually from the door being used as a handle or something heavy resting on it when open. It ranks here because door hardware takes every cycle and it is the assembly built to the lowest cost.
- Damage to the door panel or the sealing surface — Dents, cracks and a damaged perforated screen affect containment. A damaged door means the machine should not be used.
- A loose or worn hinge — Doors used as a handle, or leaned on when open, work their hinges loose and the latch stops meeting squarely.
Where to start, and what each check rules out
- Inspect the door window screen and the seal surface — Any damage there means stop using the machine.
- Open and close the door slowly and watch the latch tabs — A tab that does not spring back is the fault, visible without tools.
- Look at the door from the side for a twist or a drop — A door out of plane will not seal or latch reliably.
What to try yourself
- Stop using the machine if the door is bent, cracked or damaged — A damaged door is the one microwave fault that is genuinely worth stopping for.
- Check nothing is fouling the door in a built-in installation — A trim kit or a cabinet edge can hold the door a fraction open.
- STOP — latch assemblies and interlock switches are inside the cabinet — The high-voltage capacitor makes this technician-only work.

A bent door, a cracked window screen or a damaged seal surface means the machine stops being used until a technician has seen it. Do not tape, wedge or force a door to make it run.
When this stops being a home repair
Call for any physical damage to the door, for broken latch tabs, or for a machine that runs only when the door is pushed. All of these are safety components and all of them sit inside a cabinet no owner should open.
