The short answer
Start with a blocked or misfitted base grille: on a Capital built-in refrigeration column it accounts for more of these than anything else, and a door out of alignment in its opening is the next thing to rule out. A column is built into the cabinetry, ducted to a grille and levelled to the millimetre, so installation faults live on for years and present as cooling faults. Two of the four are owner work; the last one on the list is not, and knowing which is which saves the call-out.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — You can hear it working; the air inside is only cool.
- Warm at the top, still cold at the bottom — Air is not being moved around the cabinet.
- NEAR MISS - the fresh food is freezing instead — That is a control or damper fault in the other direction, and this page will not help you.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A blocked or misfitted base grille — The likeliest cause on this brand: a column breathes through one grille, and a kickplate refitted upside down or a run of cabinetry built tight across it removes the cabinet's only air path.
- A door out of alignment in its opening — Next most likely: a column door is heavy, close-tolerance and adjustable, and a cabinet that has settled leaves the gasket kissing on one side only.
- A defrost cycle that has stopped running — Third on the list: adaptive defrost fails quietly rather than all at once, the evaporator glazes over across a few weeks, airflow chokes, and the cabinet warms while the compressor runs on.
Check in this order, and why
- Take the base grille off and check the air path is genuinely open — On a built-in this is the only air path there is, so nothing below it is worth checking until it is clear.
- Test the door seal with a slip of paper all the way round — It is free, it takes a minute, and it is the cause that beats the rest on a cabinet this size.
- Look behind the rear freezer panel for a wall of ice — This is the check that either names the defrost system or takes it off the list.
What an owner can safely check
- Take the base grille off and look at what is behind it — A grille refitted the wrong way up is a common finish-work fault and it blocks everything.

- Close the door on a slip of paper and pull it out — It should drag. Do it at four places on each side; the bottom corner is where it usually fails.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the column off at its breaker before removing the base grille or any panel; these cabinets are hard-wired or fed from a dedicated outlet behind the cabinetry, and unplugging is often not an option. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not attempt to pull a column out of its opening on your own - they are heavy, tall and anchored to the surrounding cabinetry.
When to call a technician
Call once the grille is clear, the door pulls onto its seal all the way round and the fan is audible, and the cabinet still runs warm. On a built-in, call earlier than you would on a freestanding cabinet: the diagnostics are behind panels that are meant to come off in a particular order, and the cost of a forced panel on fitted cabinetry is out of all proportion to the repair.
