The short answer
Decide first whether the ice maker is making ice or the chute is failing to deliver it. Look in the bin. If the bin is empty, check the supply valve and the filter. If the bin has ice but nothing comes out, the auger or the chute flap is blocked, usually by clumped ice.
What you observe
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — No water is reaching the ice maker.
- The bin is full but nothing dispenses — An auger or chute blockage rather than a production fault.
- Hollow or undersized cubes — A restricted supply, usually the filter.
- Ice clumped into a solid mass in the bin — Slow use, or melt and refreeze from a chute flap not closing.
- NEAR MISS - no ice for the first day after installation — These take time to start producing.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A closed or restricted supply valve — First when the bin is empty. The valve serving the refrigerator is frequently closed during other plumbing work and left closed afterwards.
- A water filter overdue for replacement — Second. A saturated filter restricts flow, giving small and hollow cubes long before it gives none at all.
- A chute flap not closing or iced open — Third, and specific to through-the-door dispensers. A flap held open lets warm room air into the chute, which melts and refreezes ice into a blockage.
- Clumped ice bridging in the bin — Fourth. Ice used slowly welds itself together, and the auger then turns against a solid mass instead of loose cubes.
- An ice maker module, auger motor or fill valve fault — Last. Real, but all four causes above are cheaper and quicker to rule out.
Check in this order, and why
- Look in the ice bin first — Full bin means delivery; empty bin means production.
- Check the supply valve serving the refrigerator — Closed valves are the commonest single cause of an empty bin.
- Watch the chute flap open and close — A flap held open ices the chute and blocks it.
- Note how long the filter has been fitted — A restricted filter gives small cubes before it gives none.
What an owner can safely check
- Remove the bin and break up clumped ice — Empty it completely and check the auger turns freely by hand.

- STOP HERE if the mould stays dry with an open valve and a new filter — That is the fill valve or the module.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator before reaching into the ice bin housing or the chute, because the auger and the harvest mechanism can both operate at any time while it has power. Never put a hand into the auger area on a powered cabinet, and never free ice with a knife, a screwdriver or a hot implement. Close the supply valve before disturbing any water connection, and have towels ready for a filter change.
When to call a technician
Call when the bin is empty with the supply valve open and a new filter fitted, or when the bin holds ice and the auger will not deliver it with the chute clear. The first points at the fill valve or the module, the second at the auger motor or its switch. Call a plumber instead if the supply valve itself is seized or weeping.
