The answer first
A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where the internal repair question is closed: the high-voltage capacitor makes it technician-only. On a Café microwave any electrical symptom means unplug and stop. That puts a failed high-voltage component at the top of the list here and grease build-up in an over-range machine at the bottom.
What owners actually report
- The breaker or GFCI trips when it starts — A high-voltage component or a supply fault; either way, stop.
- Arcing or sparking inside the cavity — Metal, a damaged waveguide cover or food residue. Stop immediately.
- NEAR MISS — the machine is dead with nothing tripped — That is the no-start page and it is far less urgent.
Likely causes on this kind of machine
- A failed high-voltage component — A shorted capacitor, diode or transformer trips the circuit as soon as the magnetron is asked to run. Supply is proved before anything is condemned, because a dead outlet and a dead appliance look identical.
- Arcing from metal or a damaged waveguide cover — Foil, a metal-trimmed dish or a charred mica cover produces sparks inside the cavity. It is the one cause with an obvious owner-side explanation. It belongs at this point because it is common, and because ruling it out narrows what is left considerably.
- A shared or marginal counter circuit — A microwave next to a kettle and a toaster finds a circuit that was always borderline. It sits here because an electrical cause is both the cheapest to rule out and the one with real safety weight.
- A poor earth — The cause of any tingle, and it has to be corrected before anything else.
- Grease build-up in an over-range machine — It is both a fire risk and a reason for overheating.
Where to start, and what each check rules out
- Unplug and see whether the circuit holds — It separates the machine from the wiring in one step.
- Check what else shares the outlet — A counter circuit with several appliances on it is a real cause.
- Check what was in the cavity when it sparked — Metal trim on a plate is the commonest answer by a distance.
The owner-side procedure
- Unplug the machine and stop using it — This is the correct owner response to every symptom on this page.
- Clean burnt residue from the cavity once it is unplugged and cool — Do not scrape the mica cover; if it is charred it needs replacing.

- STOP — never open the cabinet, whatever the symptom — The capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the machine is unplugged.
Read this before touching the machine
Safety
Unplug at the first spark, smell or tingle and leave the machine unplugged. There is no safe owner inspection inside the cabinet, whatever the symptom suggests.
When to stop and call
Call an electrician if the circuit trips with the machine unplugged, and a technician if it trips only when the microwave runs. With a countertop machine, replacement is often the honest answer rather than a repair.
