The short answer
On the Caf CFE family a cabinet that is running but not holding temperature is far more often an airflow fault than a dead compressor: the evaporator ices over, the cold stops moving, and the compressor runs on without ever satisfying the sensor. What you can observe on these models
- The freezer is still hard-frozen while the fresh-food side is warm — Cold is being made; it is not reaching the upper cabinet. Look at the air path, not the compressor.
- A solid sheet of frost across the freezer rear panel — Normal frost is a light dusting that comes and goes. A sheet means a defrost cycle that is no longer clearing it.

Causes, most likely first on this family

- Overloaded cabinet or blocked interior vents — Fourth: packing boxes against the rear vents starves the fresh-food section in exactly the way a failed part would.
Check in this order, and why
- Unplug overnight, then run it and time the recovery — If cooling comes back for a day or two and then fades, the defrost circuit is the cause and nothing else on the list behaves that way.
- Vacuum the condenser and confirm the condenser fan spins — Do this while the unit is already unplugged; it costs one pass with a brush and removes a whole branch of the tree.
- Listen for the evaporator fan on restart — A fan that starts and then falls silent as the cabinet cools is a blade fouling on ice, not a dead motor.
Before you open anything
Safety
Kill the power at the plug or the breaker first; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Pulling one of these cabinets out to reach the condenser is a two-person move on a hard floor and a slow one on tile — walk it straight out, keep the water line slack in view, and never let the cabinet tip back. Refrigerant work is licensed work: if the fault turns out to be in the sealed system, the line stops there.
