The short answer
On a Budweiser glass-door cooler, level the cabinet and stop it touching anything before suspecting a component. A heavy door pulls a light cabinet out of level easily. Then check the condenser fan and the coils. The compressor itself is last, and a clunk with a warming cabinet is the one to act on.
What you observe
- A buzz you can feel through the floor or counter — A light cabinet not level or not fully in contact.
- A rattle only while the compressor runs — Something touching the cabinet or the pipework.
- A whirr from the back or a base grille — A condenser fan, usually dusty rather than failing.
- Bottles chiming on a wire shelf — Contents rather than the machine.
- NEAR MISS - a gurgle after it stops — Refrigerant settling. Normal on any fridge.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A cabinet not level or rocking — First on this design. The glass door is heavy enough to pull a light cabinet off its feet, and once a corner is unloaded the compressor's vibration goes straight into whatever it stands on.
- Contact with a wall, cupboard or appliance — Second. These are put into tight spots, and a cabinet touching a panel transfers vibration into a much larger surface than itself.
- Loose contents on wire shelves — Third, and easy to dismiss. Bottles and cans chime against each other and against the wire on every compressor start.
- A dusty condenser fan where one is fitted — Fourth. Dust collects unevenly on the blade, and the imbalance produces a whirr that rises and falls.
- Hardened compressor mounts or a failing compressor — Last. Hardened mounts pass vibration undamped; a loud clunk at start with a warming cabinet is the compressor and is urgent.
Check in this order, and why
- Rock each corner and check the feet — Free, quick, and the likeliest cause on a cabinet with a heavy door.
- Pull it clear of everything and listen again — Contact with a wall or cupboard is easy to prove.
- Open the door and listen with the shelves empty — Separates contents from machine in one minute.
- Note whether the noise follows the compressor — Noise only while it runs points at it or its mounts.

- Level the cabinet with the door closed — Adjust the feet with the weight of the glass door where it normally sits.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet before cleaning the coils or reaching behind it. Get help to move it, support the glass door while levelling, and never tilt a fridge far on its side, because oil can leave the compressor and cause a fault that was not there before. Do not wedge packing against pipework to silence a rattle, and take a cabinet with cracked or chipped glass out of use rather than working around it.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet is level with the door closed, clear of contact on every side, the shelves are tidy and the coils are clean, and a buzz or knock persists while the compressor runs. Call without further testing if the compressor clunks loudly at start and the cabinet is warming, or if it starts and stops every few seconds, because both point at the compressor or its start components.
