The short answer
On a Broich drawer unit the usual leak is a blocked condensate drain or an overfull tray, and the damage is to the cabinetry rather than the appliance. A drawer gasket admitting humid air is the second cause. There is no water supply on most of these, so a valve or line is rarely involved.
What you observe
- A damp or swollen cabinet base near the unit — The classic late-discovered built-in leak.
- Standing water inside the bottom of a drawer — The internal drain is blocked and the compartment is filling.
- Ice building in the drain channel — Melt refreezing because it cannot get away.
- A musty smell from the cabinetry run — Water that has been there longer than you think.
- NEAR MISS - condensation on a drawer front in a humid room — A surface effect, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A blocked condensate drain — First. The opening is small, food debris and mould close it, and once blocked the melt has nowhere to go but into the compartment and then the cabinetry below.
- An overfull or displaced evaporation tray — Second. The tray relies on condenser heat to evaporate the melt, so a restricted grille reduces evaporation and a tray knocked out of place during a service pours straight into the carcass.
- A drawer gasket admitting humid air — Third. More humid air means more condensate than the drain was designed to carry, so a marginal drain starts to overflow.
- A unit not level in its cut-out — Fourth. The drain and the tray both rely on gravity, and an undercounter unit shimmed unevenly during installation keeps water where it should not be.
- A cracked drain channel or split tube — Last. Uncommon, and the only cause here that is not an owner fix.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for damp in the cabinetry beside and below — Built-in leaks show in the carcass before anywhere else.
- Find the drain opening inside the compartment — Standing water or ice around it is the answer.
- Remove the front grille and check the tray — Displaced or overfull explains water under the unit.
- Test each gasket on a slip of paper — More humid air in means more water to get rid of.

Safety
Switch the unit off at its breaker before clearing the drain or reaching into the condenser area - you are working with water beside a fan that can start at any time. Never clear a drain with a knife, a skewer or stiff wire, because the cooling circuit can run behind that surface. Dry the cabinetry properly and check the flooring underneath, since a built-in leak often damages the carcass long before it damages the appliance.
When to call a technician
Call when the drain runs clear, the tray is seated, the gaskets drag on paper and water still appears. That points at a cracked channel or a split tube, and on a built-in unit it means pulling the appliance out of its cut-out. Call sooner if the cabinetry is already swollen or if the appliance trips a breaker, because water has then reached beyond the drain path.
