The short answer
Ice inside a Brigade counter means humid air is getting in faster than the defrost clears it. Gaskets damaged by trays and doors left open through prep are the first two causes. A blocked drain that freezes comes next. A defrost fault is real but is last, after the obvious ways air gets in.
What you observe
- Frost around one door or drawer edge — The seal is open along that edge and nowhere else.
- Ice over the evaporator behind the interior panel — Humidity arriving faster than defrost clears it.
- Ice in the drain channel in the cabinet base — A blocked drain freezing its own backlog.
- Ice returning within days of being cleared — A gasket or a defrost fault rather than a one-off.
- NEAR MISS - light frost after a long door-open prep session — Expected, and it should clear on the next defrost.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A door or drawer gasket damaged or not sealing — First. Gaskets on a working line are struck by trays and trolleys, and a torn or hardened seal admits humid kitchen air continuously, which becomes frost at the coldest surface.
- Doors standing open through prep — Second. A counter opened for long periods takes in kitchen air at service humidity, and the defrost cycle was never sized for that.
- A blocked drain freezing over — Third. Melt that cannot get away refreezes in the channel, which both builds ice and stops the next defrost clearing properly.
- Blocked vents or an overloaded cabinet — Fourth. Packing to the vents concentrates cold in one place, so frost builds there while the far end of the counter runs warm.
- A defrost heater, timer or termination fault — Last. Genuine, but worth diagnosing only after gaskets, usage and the drain have been dealt with.

- Note where the ice forms — Ice maps the gap, which makes it useful rather than merely annoying.
- Close each door on a slip of paper at several points — It should drag all round, including the hinge side.
- Check the drain in the cabinet base — Ice there means the drain, not the defrost.
- Watch how long doors stand open in prep — A usage answer costs nothing to act on.

Switch the unit off at its breaker before defrosting or clearing the drain, because fans can start at any time while it has power. Never chip ice off an evaporator or an interior surface with a knife or a scraper, since the cooling circuit runs directly behind. Move food to another unit before defrosting and discard anything that has been above a safe fridge temperature rather than returning it to the counter.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet has been defrosted, the drain runs clear, the gaskets drag on paper, the vents are clear and ice still returns within days. That pattern points at the defrost heater, its timer or its termination. Mention how quickly the ice rebuilds when you book, because the speed of the rebuild is the most useful single fact an engineer can have.
