The short answer
A noisy the CVCBB family unit is reporting on something moving that should not be, or something that should be moving freely and is not. What you actually observe
- A buzzing or rattling that changes when you open the freezer door — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so a noise that stops with the door open is coming from that fan or from something touching its blade.
- A rhythmic clicking or ticking from the back of the cabinet — The condenser fan striking debris, or the compressor start relay cycling. Both are at the back and both are audible from behind the appliance.
- NEAR MISS — grinding or squealing plus a cabinet that is warming — That is an evaporator fan seizing, and it becomes a cooling fault within days. Treat it as urgent and read the cooling page as well.
Causes, most likely first on the CVCBB family
- Evaporator fan blade striking ice or a failing fan bearing — First on these models: the fan sits behind the freezer rear panel where frost builds, so the blade meets ice before the motor wears out. The noise stops with the door open, which is the tell. The series is recorded with a wildcard, so suffix builds exist that this ranking cannot separate; treat the order as the series average and let what you actually hear and feel override it.
- Condenser fan obstructed by dust or debris — Second. It is the most accessible moving part on the appliance and the one most likely to have collected something. Continuous while the compressor runs, audible only from behind.
- Cabinet not level, or in contact with adjacent cabinetry — Third, and the reason a new unit is sometimes noisier than the old one: the compressor vibration is the same, but the path it takes into the floor is different.
- Compressor mounts hardened or the compressor itself noisy — Fourth. A compressor that has become loud is usually still functional, but the noise does not get better and it is not an owner repair.
- Ice maker cycling — fill, harvest and drop into the bin — Last, and often not a fault at all. It is periodic, it is loud, and it surprises owners who have just started using the ice maker.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the freezer door and listen for the noise to stop — The door switch kills the evaporator fan, so this one action separates the inside of the cabinet from everything else, and it needs no tools.
- Listen from behind the appliance with the compressor running — Condenser fan and compressor noise are both back-of-cabinet sounds; front-of-cabinet listening cannot tell them apart.
- Pull the unit out and clear the condenser area — Last because it needs the appliance moved, but it is the step that resolves a large share of back-of-cabinet noise.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not defeat the freezer door switch to watch the evaporator fan turn: that fan blade is unguarded and it is running at full speed. When you pull the cabinet out to reach the condenser, empty it first and use two people; a loaded refrigerator is heavier at the top than it looks.

When to call a technician
Call when the noise is a grind or a squeal from inside the freezer, because a seizing evaporator fan takes the cooling with it and the window between noise and warm cabinet is short. Call when the noise is from the compressor itself — hardened mounts and a loud compressor are both jobs that need the sealed system respected. A rattle you can trace to debris, a levelling problem or the ice maker is not a service call, and neither is the gurgle a working refrigerator makes.
