What goes wrong, and where each is covered

- A loud hum or a new rattle — A rough hum while cooking points at the high-voltage side; a rattle is usually the turntable. See the brand-generic microwave article for that fault.
Problem classes by frequency
- Door, latch and interlock faults — The largest group: the latch is worked on every use, and the interlocks it drives are what permit the appliance to run. The family spans more than one cavity size, and the larger cavities carry a heavier door — that lifts the latch and interlock causes up this list.
- High-voltage faults — magnetron, diode, capacitor — Second, and the group that leaves a unit running perfectly and heating nothing. Technician work only.
- Cavity and waveguide arcing damage — Fourth, and largely preventable: residue at the waveguide cover and door edge is what arcs.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance and never remove the outer case: the high-voltage capacitor inside holds a lethal charge after it is disconnected. Never defeat a door interlock and never use it with a damaged door.
