The short answer
A BMO microwave that will not heat is a short diagnosis with a firm boundary. Confirm the door is latching and the supply is sound, then stop: the components behind that are in a circuit that can kill after the appliance is unplugged.
What you actually observe
- The light, the turntable and the fan all work and the food is cold — The control side is alive; the high-voltage side is not producing. This is the defining signature.
- A loud buzz or hum when the magnetron should be firing — A failing high-voltage transformer or diode often announces itself audibly before it stops working.
- It heats weakly, or takes far longer than it used to — A magnetron losing output rather than failing outright, and on these models it worsens steadily.
- NEAR MISS — nothing at all when you press start — That is the will-not-start page, and on these models it is usually a door interlock rather than a power fault.
Causes, most likely first on the BMO family
- Magnetron failed or weakened — First on these models for a unit that runs normally and heats nothing. It is a wear component with a finite life, and it fails without warning at the end of it. The family spans more than one cavity size, and the larger cavities carry a heavier door — that lifts the latch and interlock causes up this list.
- High-voltage diode or capacitor failed — Second, and the more common of the two on many builds. A shorted diode produces a loud hum and no heat, which is a useful distinction from a silently dead magnetron.
- Door interlock switch stack out of adjustment — Third. The interlocks are what tell the machine it is safe to fire, and one that has drifted leaves everything else working while the magnetron never runs.
- Thermal cutout opening on a blocked vent or failed cooling fan — Fourth. It produces heating that stops part way through, and the underlying cause is usually airflow rather than the cutout.
- High-voltage transformer failed — Last. Uncommon, expensive, and on a countertop appliance it is normally the point at which replacement is the right answer.
Check in this order, and why
- Confirm the outlet with something else — It is free, and a microwave on a shared circuit with a marginal outlet can run its control and never fire.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the interlock switches — You should hear a clean sequence of clicks. A soft or single click points at a drifted interlock stack.
- Check the vents at the back and sides are clear — A blocked vent makes the machine overheat and cut out, and clearing it is the only heating-related fix an owner should attempt.
- Stop there and book the repair — Last, and deliberate: the next step is a high-voltage capacitor that holds a lethal charge after the appliance is unplugged.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the microwave before doing anything, and do not remove the outer case. The high-voltage capacitor inside stores a charge capable of killing long after the appliance is disconnected, and it must be discharged with the right tool by someone who knows where it is. Never run the appliance empty, never run it with a damaged door, and never defeat a door interlock: those interlocks are the only thing preventing microwave energy leaving the cavity.

When to call a technician
Call as soon as the outlet, the door and the vents are confirmed good, because everything remaining is behind the case and behind the case is a lethal circuit. Call rather than repair if the appliance is a countertop model of any age: a magnetron or transformer on a unit like that frequently costs more than a replacement, and a technician will tell you that honestly.
