The short answer
When the BRWM family finishes a cycle with water still in the tub, the water has a path and something is in it. On these models there are four places for that something to be, and this page walks them from the cheapest to the most awkward.
What you actually observe
- The cycle ends with standing water in the tub — The clearest version of the fault. Note whether the machine attempted to spin, because that splits the causes below.
- The pump runs audibly but the water level does not drop — The pump has power and is turning; the obstruction is in the filter, the hose or the impeller.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor rather than in the tub — That is the leak page, and on these models it usually starts at a hose connection rather than at the pump.
Causes, most likely first on the BRWM family
- Pump filter or coin trap blocked — First on these models by a wide margin. The filter is designed to catch what the drum lets through, and it does — until it is full, at which point the machine cannot empty at all. The family covers more than one tub size, and a heavier tub is harder on the suspension and the bearing, which moves the mechanical causes up this list.
- Drain hose kinked, trapped or blocked at the standpipe — Second, and often caused by a previous move: a hose crushed behind the machine drains slowly at first and not at all later.
- Pump impeller jammed by a foreign object — Third. A coin, a wire from an underwired garment or a hair clip stops the impeller dead, and the motor hums against it.
- Pressure switch or control not commanding the drain — Last. Suspect it only when the pump never attempts to run and the filter, hose and impeller are all clear.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen at the start of the drain phase — Silence, a hum, or a healthy whirr each point at a different branch, and the distinction takes no tools at all.
- Open the pump filter and clear it, with a towel and a shallow tray ready — On these models it is behind a panel at the bottom front, and there will be water behind it however empty the tub looks.
- Check for an obstruction at the tub outlet or the sump hose — Last, because it needs the machine moved, but it is where a sock ends up when it gets past the drum.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Assume the tub is full: open the pump filter slowly with a tray and towels in place, and if the machine has just run a hot cycle, let it cool before draining. Do not tip a loaded washer to reach the pump; drain it first and empty the drum.

When to call a technician
Call when the filter is clear, the hose is straight and the impeller turns freely, and the machine still does not drain — that combination points at the pump motor or the control and needs a meter. Call sooner if the drum is full and the machine cannot be emptied safely, because a full tub is heavy and moving it is how floors get damaged. A blocked filter or a kinked hose is an owner job on these models and needs nothing but a towel.
