The short answer
A BR unit that is running and still warm is usually failing to move cold air rather than failing to make it. On these models the useful first question is not what is broken but where the cold stops — at the evaporator, at the fan, or at the damper — and that is a different starting point from the brand-generic article you have already read.
What you actually observe
- The cabinet is warm but you can hear the unit running — A compressor that runs and never satisfies is the signature of this fault; a unit that is silent and warm belongs on the will-not-start page instead.
- The freezer side is still cold while the fresh-food side is not — On these models that split points at air distribution — the damper or the evaporator fan — rather than at refrigerant.
- NEAR MISS — warm cabinet, no sound at all, no interior light — That is a power or start-relay fault and it is a different page. Check the outlet before reading further.
Causes, most likely first on the BR family
- Frosted evaporator blocking the airflow path — Ranked first on these models because the defrost cycle tends to stall long before it fails outright: ice builds behind the rear panel over weeks, the owner notices the warmth and never sees the cause. With a single model in the family there is no platform question to settle first, so the ranking is simply what fails soonest on this chassis.
- Evaporator fan motor stalled or failing — Second, and easy to confuse with the first, because both starve the cabinet of air. The difference is audible — open the freezer and hold the door switch in; a healthy fan is a clear, steady rush.
- Door seal or alignment letting warm air in continuously — Third. On these models a seal that has taken a set at one corner will not stop the unit cooling, but it will stop it catching up, which reads to the owner as a cooling failure.
- Condenser coil or condenser fan choked with dust — Fourth. It rarely produces a warm cabinet on its own but it is what turns a marginal unit into a failing one, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to rule out.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and last for a reason: it is the least common cause here and the only one that is not an owner check. If everything above it is clean, this is where the diagnosis lands.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a thermometer in the fresh-food compartment and leave it an hour — Everything below depends on knowing whether the cabinet is warm, drifting, or simply slow to recover from a door left open.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan with the door switch held in — This is the cheapest split on the list: a silent fan and a running fan send you down different branches immediately.
- Feel the condenser coil and the compressor for heat — Do this last. Heat here tells you the sealed system is doing work, which is what you want to know once the air side is ruled out.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired exactly as you found it: it cuts power to the evaporator fan deliberately, and defeating it to watch the fan run is how people lose fingertips. Refrigerant work is licensed work; do not open, tap or top up the sealed system.

When to call a technician
Call once the air-side checks are clean — fan running, coil clear, seal holding — because what is left is the sealed system, and that is licensed work with tools no household has. Call immediately if you see oil around the compressor or smell burning: oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right. If the cabinet has been above 40 °F (4 °C) for more than a few hours, deal with the food before you deal with the appliance.
