The short answer
A Brama warewasher that will not empty is most often being asked to drain with its overflow tube still in place, or through a scrap screen and sump packed with debris. Both are settled in minutes. The drain hose and the pump come next, and the house drain is always worth ruling out.
What you observe
- The tank stays full at the end of service — Nothing has been asked to leave, or the route is closed.
- A hum during drain with no flow — The pump is powered and working against a blockage.
- The tank empties slowly and leaves debris behind — A partial restriction in the screen or the sump.
- Water rising in the floor gully when it drains — The kitchen drain cannot take the flow.
- NEAR MISS - a little water left in the sump — A small residue is normal and keeps the seals wet.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- An overflow or standpipe tube still fitted — First, and the one staff forget. The tube sets the tank level; leave it in and the machine simply cannot empty, however healthy the pump.
- A packed scrap screen and sump — Second. Everything the screen catches ends up in the sump if the screen is not emptied, and a sump full of debris blocks the pump inlet.
- A kinked, crushed or badly routed drain hose — Third. Commercial installations run hoses behind heavy equipment that gets pushed back against them.
- A blocked kitchen drain or grease trap — Fourth, and worth remembering because the machine gets blamed. If water rises outside the machine, the plumbing is the fault.
- A failed drain pump — Last. Silence during drain rather than a hum is what points here, and it is the only cause that is not kitchen work.
Check in this order, and why
- Check whether the overflow tube has been lifted out — The quickest answer available, and often the whole answer.
- Listen during the drain phase — A hum means powered and blocked; silence means the pump is not running.
- Lift the screen and look into the sump — Debris there is visible and free to clear.
- Follow the drain hose behind the machine — Kinks and crush points are the commonest install fault.

Safety
Isolate the machine at its switch or breaker before reaching into the tank or the sump - a commercial warewasher is hardwired and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Tank water is hot enough to scald and the sump often holds broken glass and cutlery, so let the machine cool and use gloves rather than bare hands. Never reach past a moving wash arm.
When to call a technician
Call when the overflow tube is out, the screen and sump are clean, the hose is clear and the tank still will not empty - especially if the pump is silent rather than humming. Call a plumber rather than an appliance engineer if water rises in the gully when the machine drains, because that is a kitchen drain or a grease trap and no repair to the machine will change it.
