The short answer
A Brada chest freezer that will not hold temperature is usually iced up or, in winter, sitting in a room too cold for its thermostat to call. Both are owner-solvable. The lid seal and a dusty condenser come next, and the sealed system is last.
What you observe
- Thick ice on the walls and under the baskets — The cold surface is insulated by its own ice.
- Food thawing in an unheated garage in winter — The room is colder than the thermostat setting, so nothing runs.
- The lid will not sit down flat — Overpacking above the line, which leaves a permanent gap.
- The compressor runs constantly in hot weather — A dusty condenser or no air gap, exposed by a hot garage.
- NEAR MISS - a softer top layer after a big shop — A warm load takes time to freeze. Not a fault.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Ice built up on the walls — First on a manual-defrost box. The walls are the evaporator, and every layer of ice on them is insulation between the cold and the food. Owners who have never defrosted theirs find this is the whole answer.
- An ambient colder than the thermostat setting — Second, and specific to unheated spaces. If the garage is colder than the freezer is asked to be, the thermostat never calls and the compressor never runs - so the box drifts to garage temperature, which in a mild spell is above freezing.
- A lid that does not close flat — Third. A chest lid seals by weight and gasket, and anything packed above the line holds it open. So does a gasket that has hardened.
- A dusty condenser or no air gap — Fourth. A box jammed into a corner in a hot garage cannot reject heat, and the compressor runs and runs for less and less.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and the only one that is not an owner check.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at how thick the ice on the walls is — Anything more than a light coating is worth clearing before diagnosing anything else.
- Note the room temperature in winter — A garage colder than the setting explains a freezer that never runs.
- Close the lid and look along its edge — A gap anywhere means it is not sealing.
- Check the condenser and the space around the cabinet — Dust and a tight corner both cost you capacity in summer.
What an owner can safely check
- Move the contents and defrost the cabinet completely — Empty it, open the lid, and let every trace of ice melt before drying and restarting.
Tools: cool box, towelsAbout 120 min
- Measure the interior and the room — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below; also note whether the room is colder than the setting.
Tools: fridge thermometerAbout 20 min
- Re-pack below the line and check the lid closes flat — Nothing above the level where the lid seals, and check the gasket for hardening.
About 20 min
- Clean the condenser and pull the box clear of the wall — Vacuum the coil and leave a real air gap all round.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 25 min
- STOP HERE if it will not freeze after a full defrost in a warm room — That diagnosis needs gauges.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the freezer before defrosting or removing any cover - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and defrosting produces a lot of water beside a live appliance. Never chip ice off the walls with a knife or screwdriver, because the cooling coils are inside those walls and a puncture ends the appliance. Empty a chest freezer before moving it; loaded, it is far heavier than it looks.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet has been fully defrosted, the lid closes flat, the condenser is clean and it still will not hold temperature in a normally warm room. That is the sealed system and it needs gauges. If the problem is only that the garage is colder than the setting, ask whether your model is rated for an unheated space rather than calling for a repair.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Brada manual-defrost chest freezers, which are defrosted by hand and are often kept in unheated spaces. Frost-free upright freezers clear their own ice and fail differently; they are a separate class and not covered here. Deliberately absent: temperature set points, ambient ratings, capacities and refrigerant charge, which differ by model.
