A BCD refrigerator that will not hold temperature is worth diagnosing with a thermometer before a screwdriver. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, and knowing how far from that you actually are decides whether this is an emergency or a weekend job.

- Damper or duct blocked between the compartments — Specific to the split-compartment layout on this family, and it produces the cold-freezer, warm-fridge picture without any ice at all.
- Door seal deformed or a door not closing square — Common after a move or a heavy load in the door. It adds humidity and run time, and on a marginal machine it is the difference between coping and not.
- Condenser fan not running — Less common than a dirty coil but it has the same effect and a worse ending, because the compressor runs hot until something protects it.

- Note whether the compressor is running at all — Do this before anything else if the cabinet is silent, because a silent cabinet and a running one lead to entirely different pages of the manual.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan with the door switch held closed — Separates the two leading causes before any panel comes off, which is why it is this high in the order.
- Pull the cabinet out and inspect the condenser coil — Third because it needs two people and floor space, but a choked coil explains a slow decline better than any other cause.
- Look at the rear freezer panel vents for a continuous frost sheet — Confirms the airflow blockage if the fan is running, and it needs nothing but a torch.
