What you observe
- A buzz from the machine compartment at start-up only — The start relay and the condenser fan both live there, and both announce themselves at the moment the compressor kicks in.
- A deep hum that has got louder over months — Gradual is the key word. A compressor working against a restriction or a dirty condenser gets louder slowly rather than suddenly.

- Rock the cabinet gently front to back — Any movement at a foot means the load is on three points and the shell is free to resonate. Level it before diagnosing anything mechanical.
- Open the freezer door with the noise running — The door switch stops the evaporator fan. If the noise stops with it, you have located the fault in one move and without a tool.
- Pull the cabinet forward and clean the condenser — Slow, but it is both a test and a repair: a choked condenser makes noise and shortens compressor life at the same time.
