What this machine is like to own
A refrigerator is the one appliance in the house that never switches off, so almost everything that goes wrong with it is a slow degradation rather than a sudden failure. This is a portable, off-grid refrigeration unit built for RV, van and solar use, and the supply it is fed from — a leisure battery, a solar controller, an inverter or a wall adapter — is part of the diagnosis, and on this class it is usually the first part of it. Two complaints dominate: a cabinet that is no longer holding temperature, and water arriving where it should not. Where to start, whatever the symptom
- read a thermometer in each compartment before you touch anything, because half the list below forks on that one number
- pull the base grille and look at the condenser, since a choked coil imitates several different faults at once
- check the door seals with a sheet of paper, because a leaking seal shows up as constant running long before it shows up as warm food

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator is heavy and top-heavy on its castors. Never work with your hands behind a cabinet that is not chocked, and never tip one alone. The sealed refrigerant circuit is not owner-serviceable. Do not cut, bend or braze any tube, and do not attempt to add refrigerant.
