- Igniter glows but oven does not heat — the most common scenario. The igniter draws insufficient current. Measure amp draw with a clamp meter on one of the igniter wires: below 3.0 amps confirms a failing igniter
- Igniter does not glow at all — the igniter coil has broken (open circuit) or the wiring/connector has failed. Measure resistance across the igniter terminals: a healthy igniter reads 40-400 ohms depending on type. Open circuit = broken element
- Gas odor without ignition — the gas valve is opening (current draw is adequate) but the igniter is not positioned correctly to light the gas. Replacing the Igniter
- Shut off the gas supply at the valve behind the range. Disconnect power at the outlet or breaker
- Open the oven and remove the racks. Remove the oven floor panel if present (Torx T20 screws)
- The gas burner assembly is visible at the bottom of the oven. The igniter sits at one end of the burner tube, mounted on a bracket with two Torx T15 screws
- Disconnect the igniter wire connector — it routes from the igniter through the oven bottom to the control area. On some models, the connector is accessible from the back of the range without removing the igniter first
- Remove the two T15 bracket screws. Carefully slide the old igniter out — it is fragile and will shatter if dropped
- Install the new igniter on the bracket. Handle the new element by its ceramic base only — skin oils on the silicon carbide surface cause hot spots that shorten igniter life
- Position the igniter so its tip is adjacent to the gas orifice on the burner — typically within 1/4 inch. The bracket screw slots allow minor position adjustment
- Reconnect the wire connector. Replace the oven floor, racks, and any panels
- Restore gas and power. Set the oven to 350°F and observe: the igniter should glow bright white within 60-90 seconds, followed by gas ignition and a visible flame across the burner
Igniter Lifespan
Hot surface igniters last 3-7 years — they are a consumable component designed to be replaced periodically over the oven's life. The silicon carbide material gradually degrades from the extreme thermal cycling (room temperature to 1,800°F and back every time the burner cycles). Silicon nitride igniters last somewhat longer (5-10 years) due to superior thermal shock resistance.
