What poor cleaning usually means on a Bosch
On a Bosch dishwasher, dirty or filmed dishes are usually the filter, the feed to the upper arm, or the cycle chosen - not the wash pump. These machines do not grind food, so the filter carries everything, and the upper rack is fed through a tube on the rear wall that a tall item can block. All three checks are free and take minutes.
What you are seeing
- The upper rack is consistently worse than the lower rack.
- Gritty deposits inside cups and bowls after a full cycle.
- A white film building on glassware over weeks.
- Results are acceptable on long cycles and poor on short ones.
- Not this fault: Water left standing in the sump - that is a drainage fault.

Most likely causes, in Bosch order
- Filter assembly loaded with soil — Why ranked: First because there is no grinder on this platform. Everything scraped off the load stays in the filter and is pumped back over the dishes.
- Feed to the upper arm or third rack blocked by loading — Why ranked: The Bosch-specific finding. The upper arm is fed from the rear wall, so a tall item across the rack starves the whole top of the machine.
- A short or express cycle used on a soiled load — Why ranked: Ranked here because it is the most common owner-side cause, and switching cycles proves it in one load.
- Rinse aid or detergent wrong for the water — Why ranked: Shows as film and spotting rather than as food left behind, which is why it sits below the two mechanical causes.
- Spray arm holes limed over, or the softener reservoir empty on models that have one — Why ranked: Slowest to develop. It follows years of hard water and shows as a gradual, even decline across the whole load.
What to check, in order
- Twist out the filter and look at it before running anything else. — Because: Rank one, and it is a visual answer that decides whether the rest of the list matters.
- Load the machine as usual, then look for anything crossing the path to the rear feed tube. — Because: It reproduces rank two under real conditions, which an empty machine never shows.
- Note which cycle is normally used and rerun the same load on auto or heavy. — Because: Rank three is proved or cleared in a single cycle at no cost.
- Check the rinse-aid reservoir, and the salt reservoir if the machine has one. — Because: It covers ranks four and five, both of which show as film rather than food.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher breaker before removing the toe kick or any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. These machines are usually hard-wired, so pulling the machine forward does not isolate it. Broken glass hides in the filter cup - use a brush rather than bare fingers. Use dishwasher salt only in a machine with a salt reservoir; never put it in the detergent cup.
When this becomes a service call
Results stay poor with a clean filter, correct loading and a full-length cycle. The upper arm does not turn even with the feed path clear. Film persists after rinse aid, detergent and salt have all been corrected. The wash pump sounds rough or stops partway through a cycle.
