The short answer
A leaking WGH washer leaks from a small number of places and each one leaves its water in a different spot. Front of the cabinet means the door seal or the detergent drawer; under the middle means a hose or the pump; behind means the inlet fittings.
What this looks like from the kitchen
- Water tracking along the floor from behind to the front — The source is at the back and the destination is at the front, which is why the puddle position misleads so often.
- Damp inside the door seal fold with grit in it — The early stage of a seal leak, and the point at which cleaning the fold still fixes it.
- NEAR MISS - condensation under a machine in a cold room — A cold cabinet in a warm humid room makes its own water and no plumbing is involved.
- NEAR MISS - a few drops from the seal when the door opens — Normal on a front-loading machine: the seal holds a little water by design and it runs out when the door swings.
- Water only on the drain step — Timing places this at the pump housing, the drain hose or the standpipe connection.
Likeliest causes first
- Pump housing or filter seat not sealing — Very often follows a filter clean where the cap went back cross-threaded or without its seal seated.
- Drain hose out of the standpipe or clipped badly — Ranks high because a hose that has worked loose empties a full tub onto the floor rather than dripping, which is why it is so dramatic.
- Door seal torn, folded or holding debris — First on this family: the fold at the bottom of the seal collects grit and hair, and that is exactly where the rubber wears through.
- Inlet hose union weeping at the tap — Under mains pressure all the time, so it leaks between washes as well as during them - a useful distinguishing feature.
The order the layout dictates
- Run the seal fold with a cloth and look for grit and tears — Second because it is the leading cause, and the inspection and the fix are often the same action.
- Pull the machine out and watch a full cycle from behind — Slow and awkward, which is why it is low in the order, but it is the check that finds an internal clip.
- Note which step of the cycle the water appears on — Fill, wash and drain implicate different components, so the timing is worth more than the location.
- Dry the floor completely and lay paper towel front, middle and back — The towel that wets first names the region, and that is a far stronger start than guessing from a puddle.

Kill the power first. If the machine needs to come forward, walk it rather than dragging it: these cabinets carry a heavy counterweight at the top and they tip more easily than their weight suggests.
